Airport Deputy Fire Chief - Des Moines International Airport Full-time Only Salary: Starting pay is $18.76 hourly / $62,433.28 annually Work Hours: 48/96 work schedule. Seeking Qualified Candidates! Under general direction of the Fire Chief, the Airport Deputy Chief, supervises, assigns, reviews, and participates in the work of staff responsible for controlling and extinguishing fires; rescuing persons endangered by aircraft crash and fire or structural fires; preventing fire by reducing or eliminating potential fire hazards; responding to and providing assistance for medical aid calls, vehicle accidents, and Hazmat incidents on airport grounds. Essential Functions * Supervising day-to-day ARFF functions, developing staff to a high degree of competence, and overseeing the assignment of subordinates to include maintaining airport contract minimum manning requirements. * Enforcing discipline, good order, and the highest standards of personal and unit probity. * Monitoring and evaluating the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods, procedures, techniques, and equipment utilized in the conduct of all activities and making recommendations to eliminate inadequacies or improving operations, service and staffing levels, while promoting change management to ensure successful completion. * Analyzing problems, identifying solutions and implementing recommendations in support of Aviation Department goals, policies and procedures. * Supervising staff by clearly defining expectations and assignments, providing clear orders and instructions, maintaining approachability, and listening to others, showing concern for others, exhibiting flexibility, decisiveness and calm demeanor in high-pressure situations and contingencies, motivating others and otherwise providing effective leadership. * Develop programs and procedures to ensure best practices and to maintain standards. * Working with ARFF Command staff to develop programs and standard operating procedures to ensure best practices and to maintain standards. * Participate in the implementation, and maintenance of policies and procedures for the recording, indexing, filing, and retrieving of active documents and the storage of inactive documents; assist in development and maintenance of the work plan for the records management function. * Assist the Fire Chief in ensuring compliance with Part 139 ARFF requirements in accordance with FAA Certification Standards and other federal, state and local laws. * Ensuring the ARFF Cadre adheres to all legal, technical and administrative guidelines. * Assist the ARFF Fire Chief with designing and conducting emergency workshops and exercises to train staff and local emergency response personnel. * Make recommendations to the ARFF Fire Chief regarding hiring, training, discipline, and promotion of subordinates. * Maintaining technical and supervisory proficiency; organize and prioritize projects and multiple tasks in an effective and timely manner. * Attend and participate in daily training, professional group meetings, maintaining awareness of new trends in aircraft fire fighting and rescue, and incorporating new developments as appropriate. * Must be willing to work nonconventional work hours as assigned work shift, as well days off to attend training, inspections, emergencies etc. * Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Fire Chief. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities * Ability to carry out oral and written directions. * Ability to prepare reports on the handling of routine or emergency duties. * Must demonstrate good character appropriate to the requirements of the job. * Ability to communicate effectively to individuals and groups using good oral, written, and listening skills. * Ability to exercise sound judgment in determining the appropriate action to be taken relating to job responsibilities. * Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties, to include all client and airport co-employees. * Must present an appearance consistent with other employee appearance standards. * Must be able to work any shift assigned, including nights, holidays and weekends to include scheduled and unscheduled overtime and as needed on an emergency basis. * Must pass airfield/customer driving test; and obtain/maintain Ramp, Apron, and Airfield driving clearances as required. * Must pass FBI fingerprint-based criminal history records check to obtain/maintain an airport SIDA badge. Education, Qualifications, and Experience Necessary * Minimum 21 years of age * Minimum five (5) years full time firefighting experience or three (3) years of ARFF experience with at least one (1) year as a Fire Officer * US Citizen with GED or High School Diploma * Valid drivers' license and driving history acceptable to the customer. * Ability to pass U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) fingerprint and background investigations. * Know and understand fire suppression, prevention, and combat (tactical) techniques as it applies to aircraft. * Must meet local standards pertaining to qualifications and training. Certifications & Licenses * Must have NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800 and 300. * Must be certified as an NFPA 1001 Firefighter II (State / IFSAC / Pro-Board) * Must be certified to the NFPA 472, Hazardous Materials-Operations (State / IFSAC / Pro-Board) * Must be certified as an NFPA 1003 Airport Firefighter (State / IFSAC / Pro-Board) or completion of an FAA 40-hour approved course with current annual burn. * Must be certified as an Iowa State EMT or higher certification at time of hire. Must maintain the EMS certification throughout term of employment. * Current AHA CPR (Professional Rescuer Level) All candidates must successfully pass a pre-employment and annual physical exam, drug test and extensive background check.
