Position Summary

The Digital Archivist leads and supports the Saint Louis University Archives' efforts to acquire, describe, preserve, and provide access to digitized and born-digital records and papers. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Distinctive Collections and Digital Services, and working collaboratively with the University Archivist, Digital Resources Librarian, Systems Librarian, as well as other librarians, University faculty, stakeholders, and community members.

The Digital Archivist will develop workflows to ingest, appraise, preserve, process, and provide access to born-digital and newly digitized records, including university records, audiovisual materials, and materials related to the Center for Bosnian Studies. The Digital Archivist will aid in managing records under the forthcoming records retention policy and appropriate collection development practices.

The Digital Archivist will also assist with the processing practices and reference activities related to the Center for Bosnian Studies' collections.

Position Purpose

Saint Louis University Libraries have an increasing need for expertise in digital archives and preservation. With the transfer of the renowned Center for Bosnian Studies to the University's Libraries and Museums, as well as an increasing number of digitized and born-digital acquisitions, the Digital Archivist will play a critical role in ensuring the long-term preservation and access to these materials. Priorities will include working with the University Archivist to develop a digital collection development policy; developing and sustaining collaborative partnerships on campus and in the region; developing workflows to meet institutional priorities; and making recommendations informed by best practices for digital preservation.

Responsibilities of this position include:

Digital Preservation and Planning (50%)

  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to facilitate the acquisition, preservation, arrangement, description, and access to digitized and born-digital materials in accordance with best practices for the digital asset lifecycle
  • Provide guidance and assistance to university offices in developing, implementing, and improving recordkeeping practices related to the management and preservation of electronic records, including accessibility, sustainability, and copyright/fair use, etc.
  • Provide guidance and assistance to university administrators and donors on transfers of digital records and papers
  • In collaboration with the University Archivist and Digital Resources Librarian, develop documentation and workflows for processing hybrid and born-digital collections to ensure accessibility to the public
  • Plan and manage digital projects, identifying opportunities for cross-platform integration and workflow improvements
  • Supervise student employees working on digital preservation projects
  • Assist in the development and management of grants and other fundraising activities related to born-digital materials or digitization projects, both for materials related to the Center for Bosnian Studies and other university records
  • Collect and present usage statistics and other reporting metrics for internal and external stakeholders

Center for Bosnian Studies Collection (40%)

  • Work collaboratively with University Archives faculty and staff to provide guidance for the processing of new physical Center for Bosnian Studies archival collections
  • Perform arrangement and description on these materials as needed
  • Respond to researcher queries related to Bosnian Studies collections
  • Serve as a liaison between existing Center for Bosnian Studies affiliates, donors, and stakeholders and the University Archives
  • Develop exhibits, both digital and physical, related to the Center for Bosnian Studies
  • Work with other Distinctive Collections staff and faculty to increase local and international use and visibility
  • Develop and enhance catalog records related to the Center in the collections management systems, including Sierra, ArchivesSpace, and CONTENTdm

Service, Scholarship, and Professional Development (10%)

  • Serve on committees and task forces at the department, Libraries, and University level
  • Participate in local, state, and national/international professional and scholarly societies and organizations

Required Qualifications

  • An American Library Association-accredited master's degree in Library and Information Science or international equivalent
  • Motivation for continuous professional development and growth as a faculty member
  • Experience with digital preservation and digital archives
  • Experience in cataloging, documentation, and inventory management of physical and digital artifacts and archival material
  • Experience using digital asset management systems and institutional repositories
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a team member in a dynamic environment
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to and support for equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility
  • Ability to set priorities and meet deadlines
