Job Summary

UCDH Outpatient pharmacies emphasize patient care in Hospital Discharge, Oncology, Infectious Diseases, Ambulatory Care, Employee Health and Specialty Pharmacy. Our pharmacies are responsible for screening prescriptions for appropriateness and making interventions, preparing medications for dispensing, distribution activities, providing immunizations and providing patient consultations. Staff are responsible for appropriate prescription billing to multiple payers including third party insurances, Medicaid, Medicare D and Medicare B plans. Our pharmacies maintain compliance with multiple accrediting bodies and with State and Federal Laws and Regulations.

The Automation/Inventory Technician 3 positions is an integral member of the healthcare team and is responsible for ensuring pharmacy robotics and automation (i.e. but not limited to: ScriptPro, Parata, pill packaging systems, conveyer systems) are stocked, maintained, and in operational status. In addition, ensures inventory supply meets the demands of our patients' needs in a timely manner including but not limited to medication procurement, ordering, receiving, and inventory adjustments. Effectively maintains compliance with UCDH policies and procedures, State and Federal laws and regulations including the 340B Drug Pricing Program and the Drug Supply Chain Security Act, and accrediting bodies. Provides training and expertise in automation system functions, optimization, enhancements and troubleshooting of both inventory and prescription filling systems.

Works with management to collect and present data and establish policies, procedures, standards, and objectives for automated systems, processes, and implementation.

The Automation/Inventory Technician 3 also provides drug dispensing and distribution activities, compounding medications, prescription billing, processing payments for prescriptions, and tracking deliveries as assigned. This position fosters excellent intradepartmental and interdepartmental relationships and provides quality and cost-effective pharmaceutical care to all patients.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position.

  • California Licensed Pharmacy Technician
  • Current Registration with the California State Board of Pharmacy as a Licensed Pharmacy Technician
  • 1 year of Recent work experience in inventory management of drug supply
  • 2 years of recent work experience in an Outpatient Pharmacy or Specialty Pharmacy as a licensed Pharmacy Technician
  • Experience in Pharmacy Automation
  • Previous experience overseeing, training and leading pharmacy technicians
  • Working knowledge of current third-party insurances, Medicare Part B and California State Medicaid
  • Working knowledge of billing and submitting authorization requests for State funded insurance programs
  • Must be able to accurately perform pharmacy calculations
  • Working knowledge of current California Pharmacy Law
  • Ability to operate Pharmacy Information System and other computer programs
  • Must be able to walk/stand stoop and bend for long periods of time
  • Skills and abilities necessary to effectively communicate and plan with other areas of the Department
  • Ability to train, operate and maintain pallet jack, push/pull carts and other equipment for inventory movement and control
  • Intermediate computer software skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in acquiring inventory from wholesalers, direct from manufacturers, and/or other vendors
  • Experience correctly and accurately using, maintainting, and troubleshooting pharmacy automation
  • Experienced in inventory management at a Health System Outpatient Pharmacy or Specialty Pharmacy
  • Experience running reports and analyzing data for inventory requirements and/or optimizing system operations
  • Experience with 340B drug pricing program inventory management and 340B accumulator platforms
  • Experience with Microsoft Office software such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Experienced in utilizing EPIC Willow Ambulatory pharmacy dispensing system
  • Previous project planning experience
  • Experienced in non-sterile compounding tasks using equipment including, but not limited to: graduated cylinders, mortars and pestles, scales, stirring machines, etc.
  • Current working knowledge of pharmacy terminology, generic/brand names and drug abbreviations
  • Working knowledge of current Medi-Cal Formulary and other third-party billing systems
  • Must be able to recognize situations that exceed technician authority and ability and must be referred to a pharmacist for resolution
  • Problem-solving skills to independently recognize and define a problem and identify the resources available to help solve the problem. To independently create and implement viable solutions and follow through to ensure the problem is resolved
  • Ability to exercise discretion to ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained, and a professional, respectful clinic/department environment exists at all times
  • Ability to impart knowledge and develop the skills of students participating in training programs, as well as new hires and staff seeking additional opportunities
  • Working knowledge of and skill to apply practices, principles and techniques of patient care related to area of expertise
  • Written and oral communication skills to provide information, explanations and instructions clearly and concisely to, and to elicit information from others with varying levels of ability to understand, including individuals who are ill or distressed, or who may not speak English
  • Must be able to lift packages up to 50 pounds without assistance and push/pull carts up to 600 pounds

Department Overview

The Pharmacy Department provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient pharmaceutical services (prescriptions, unit dose, IV admixtures, clinical infusion pumps and teaching) throughout the Medical Center complex 24 hours per day. The Department is comprised of three inpatient and six outpatient pharmacies, a sterile production lab and the full complement of pharmacy purchasing, stores and distribution.
