Featured Job Medical Assistant - Neurosurgery
Job Summary The anticipated duration of this assignment is approximately 6 months.
The UCSF Monterey Neurosurgery Clinic is seeking a Medical Assistant 3 (Hospital Assistant 3) to support patient care delivery under the guidance of Ambulatory Services policies and procedures. The ideal candidate will bring strong clinical skills, attention to detail, and a patient-centered mindset to a fast-paced, multi-specialty environment.
In this role, the Medical Assistant will collaborate with providers and staff to deliver coordinated, compassionate care. This includes preparing patients for exams, assisting with procedures, documenting clinical data, managing supplies, and ensuring adherence to UCSF service and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Duties
- Perform and document clinical functions: vital signs, pain screenings, and chief complaints.
- Assist with medical procedures including injections, wound care, specimen collection, and Point-of-Care testing (POCT).
- Maintain cleanliness and stock of exam rooms, ensuring sterile processing and proper documentation.
- Process authorizations for medications, referrals, and imaging.
- Serve as a float within the department and support patient flow and safety.
- Train new staff and temporary workers in front and back office procedures.
Communication Duties
- Uphold UCSF's House and Telephone Standards with professionalism and courtesy.
- Relay provider instructions to patients and assist with conflict resolution as needed.
- Notify patients of provider delays and communicate expectations.
- Utilize APeX to:
- Document and pend orders, update medication/allergy lists.
- Open and manage telephone encounters and staff messages.
- Support patient scheduling and administrative workflows.
Operations Duties
- Manage supply inventory, lab equipment, and ensure compliance with infection control and safety standards.
- Coordinate complex procedures, tests, and follow-ups across multiple clinics.
- Support Marin-Neurosurgery and other adult specialty clinics when needed.
- Participate in quality improvement and customer service initiatives.

Department Description UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.
Required Qualifications
- One year of experience as a Medical Assistant in a medical practice.
- Medical Assistant Certification.
- Current American Heart Association CPR Certification.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and general computer applications.
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations.
- Willingness and ability to travel and work across UCSF campuses and satellite locations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience with Epic/APeX electronic medical record system.
- Fluency in Spanish or Chinese.
- Experience in Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, or Family Medicine.
- Background in data entry, verification, and analysis.
- Customer service experience in a clinical setting.
