Job Summary

Supervises staff involved in routine research study coordination. Receives predetermined work assignments that are subject to a moderate level of control and review. Oversees staff in the execution of assignments; trains and mentors staff to improve the quality and quantity of work. Reporting to a Principal Investigator (PI) or Director, the incumbent may have central responsibility for ensuring IRB approval and compliance using the online system, contract generation, negotiation and approval, subject recruitment, appropriate study testing, and adequate enrollment of multicenter clinical trials, longitudinal cohort studies, local investigator-initiated studies, and biorepository efforts; exercise strong administration and management leadership of clinical research, strong research coordination, and may lead experienced personnel to ensure optimal systems for efficiency, compliance, safety, financial oversight, and contractual expertise in negotiations and execution, as well as create and implement quality improvement processes. This is a position of leadership whose main purpose is to ensure that clinical research commitments are met and that the programs maintain a reputation for excellence in all activities. In addition, the position will coordinate and supervise clinical research staff work schedules, approve HBS timesheets and leave requests, and assist with the training of Assistant CRCs. The position will be responsible for maintaining and updating standard operating procedure documents, lists of clinical research equipment, and certifications for research faculty and personnel, and assisting faculty with feasibility questionnaires for potential studies. The position will supervise and train other CRCs in preparing IRB submissions, OCTA submissions, and study budget reviews.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $164,300 - $399,100 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The UCSF Department of Ophthalmology is one of the leading ophthalmology departments in clinical care, training, and research nationwide. The department is one of the largest recipients of federal grant funds among peer departments, ranked 2nd in overall National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding in the country.

UCSF's renowned eye care services are located in a state-of-the-art home, the Wayne and Gladys Valley Center for Vision (WGVCV). Located at UCSF's Mission Bay Campus, the center houses the Vision Clinics, where many of UCSF's eye care programs have relocated, as well as research and teaching facilities. Ophthalmology conducts its patient care, teaching, research, and public service activities currently at multiple UCSF campuses: Parnassus, Mt. Zion, Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC), San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH), East Bay (BOPC), and Benioff Children's Hospital at Mission Bay and in Oakland. The Department sponsors numerous invited speakers, research seminars, journal clubs, as well as a postdoctoral training program focused on mentorship, networking, and recognition. The UCSF Department of Ophthalmology consists of approximately 300 full-time employees, including clinical faculty, basic scientists, clinical and research trainees, and administrative staff (including UCSF Health employees).

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and three years experience including at least one lead/supervisory role or equivalent experience/training
  • Ability to obtain certification by the Society of Clinical Research Associates or the Association of Clinical Research Professionals within one year of the date of hire.
  • Working knowledge of clinical or laboratory research, clinical trial recruitment, eligibility, protocol adherence, quality data submission and adverse event reporting.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities, prioritize projects and meet the demands of a fast-paced and dynamic work environment. Adaptable to quickly changing priorities.
  • Demonstrated skills in employee supervision and HR administration. Demonstrated experience in training others, particularly in the field of research.
  • Critical thinking skills to evaluate issues and identify a potential solution.
  • Clear and concise communicator; good verbal and written communication skills; both.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including but not limited to: problem-solving, teamwork development, leadership, mentorship. Interpersonal skills to effectively motivate others. Works well with others to achieve common goals. Ability to cultivate relationships with multiple stakeholders at various levels of administration.
  • Ability to perform all commonly applicable functions in word processing and spreadsheet software. Effectively uses campus' clinical information and documentation application programs. Proven ability utilizing clinical trial management systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop recruitment strategies in complex environments and differing patient pools, independently identifying recruitment leads, implementing new strategies, and continually adjusting strategies to meet current recruitment goals.
  • In-depth knowledge of clinical research contracts and grants, clinical trials, protocols, FDA regulations, and complex visit structures.
  • Project management skills to oversee the administrative operations of the clinical trials program; knowledge of strategies for recruiting human subjects.
  • Ability to analyze complex and non-routine issues requiring innovative solutions
  • Ability to assess and respond to audit risk; ability to develop project plans/schedules and motivate team to meet deadlines
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies and regulations
  • Financial analysis skills; demonstrated skills in preparing and presenting financial and quantitative analyses, including financial projections and budgets
  • Significant project and clinical trial management experience or progressively responsible experience in a related position including regulatory and compliance responsibilities
  • Experience using database software, such as MS Access or FileMaker Pro

Preferred Qualifications


  • Advanced degree preferred.
  • Fluency in spreadsheet software; ability to develop complex spreadsheets independently; demonstrated skills in audit preparation, execution, and follow-up.
  • Experience in risk management regarding study subjects, federal and non-federal sponsors and regulating bodies.
  • Experience with grant application procedures, personnel documentation, contract generation and subcontracting, preferably at UCSF.
  • Certification by the Society of Clinical Research Associates or the Association of Clinical Research Professionals

License/Certification


  • Ability to obtain certification by the Society of Clinical Research Associates or the Association of Clinical Research Professionals within one year of the date of hire.
