DESCRIPTION

Acting as an independent computer programming specialist dedicated to continued development and maintenance of bioinformatics software (e.g., Cytoscape, NDEx and Cytoscape Cyberinfrastucture) and novel biological visualizations. Evaluates state-of-the-art technologies for suitability in executing such projects, and incorporates them into development strategies and designs, as appropriate. Coordinates, evaluates, and leads ongoing software development activities executed by lab-based, national, and international team members. Analyzes current and future software needs of the lab, and integrates recommended software and hardware solutions into the existing environment. Sets up, configures, and maintains web servers in addition to evaluating and deploying new web technologies. Provides comprehensive consulting services for students and postdoctoral researchers regarding software and hardware matters.

Uses skills as an advanced, specialized bioinformatics programming professional with an in-depth understanding of computational algorithms and systems to identify and resolve a wide range of highly complex issues / software bugs where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. May lead or mentor a team of bioinformatics programming professionals.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Nine years of related experience, education/training, OR an Bachelor's degree in related area plus five years of related experience/training.

  • In-depth knowledge of bioinformatics methods, applications programming, web development and data structures.

  • In-depth knowledge of bioinformatics programming design, modification and implementation.

  • Advanced understanding of relational databases, web interfaces and operating systems.

  • Advanced project management skills.

  • In-depth knowledge of modern biology and applicable field of research.

  • Advanced interpersonal skills in order to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at all levels in the organization, including senior project leadership.

  • Ability to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner.

  • Advanced ability to interface with management on a regular basis.

  • Ability to lead a team, meet deadlines and demonstrate advanced problem solving skills.

  • In-depth knowledge of web, application and data security concepts and methods.

  • Demonstrated work experience with Java, TypeScript, Javascript and Python, and their application development environments. Proficiency with high-level computer programming concepts, including object-oriented programming and relational database design. Experience with HTML, CGI, JSP, and other web-based scripting languages.

  • Experience with the UNIX operating system (Ubuntu and CentOS) and experience with UNIX system administration.

  • Knowledge of microcomputer based platforms (such as Windows or Mac OS). Bourne and c-shell script programming.

  • Experience with general software utilities such as text editors such as vi, text formatters, compilers and debuggers.

  • Knowledge of computer communications mechanisms (TCP/IP).

  • Demonstrated ability to think and work independently in an organized and effective manner in an environment that has rapidly shifting and often contradictory demands and priorities.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must be willing to work in an animal-related research environment.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $116,000 - $224,200 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $55.56 - $107.38

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
