Job Summary

Under general supervision and keeping with the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) standards, performs a variety of tree maintenance duties, such as, pruning, installation and removal of trees, operating an aerial truck, climbing trees at considerable heights above the grounds, and using a variety of tree maintenance equipment to maintain the health, strength, and attractiveness of trees in a campus environment. Must have a good understanding of tree anatomy, current ANSI Z1.33.1 and ANSI S300 standards, ISA tree pruning guidelines, and OSHA regulations.

Essential Job Duties

  • Climb trees and utilize an aerial truck to access work areas.
  • Use climbing saddles, ropes, cabling, rigging, and approved knots to access and move safely in trees when reach by aerial truck is not possible.
  • Operate equipment such as chainsaws, chippers, stump grinders, tractor, ladders, pole pruners, and hand tools.
  • Prune trees to clean, restore canopy, and remove sections of trees or entire trees as required.
  • Inspect trees for diseased or unhealthy conditions and perform recommended treatment.
  • Perform preventative and safety maintenance on trees such as installing cables, bolting, and support braces.
  • Maintain records of tree work, inspections, and inventory in a database (ArborPro or GIS).
  • Install new trees and maintain them during the establishment period.
  • Identify serious problems, such as disease or pest conditions, fungus, fruiting bodies, decayed trunks or branches, or other structural weaknesses, or anything indicating a potential hazard and take corrective action.
  • Maintain the required daily safety equipment logs and safety protocols.
  • Respond during off-duty hours emergency calls regarding fallen trees or limbs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Basic requirements

  • Must have 3 years' experience in general care and maintenance of trees, including climbing experience.
  • Current tree climber certification (e.g., ISA certified tree worker climber specialist or similar), or ability to obtain one within six months of hire.
  • Good understanding of tree anatomy.
  • Good understanding of ANSI Z133 and ANSI 300 standards.
  • Good understanding of ISA tree pruning guidelines.
  • Good understanding of OSHA regulations related to tree care.
  • This position requires the use of company vehicles to perform work and move between assignments.
  • Must possess a valid California Driver's license and maintain it throughout the course of employment. Must be eligible and be able to adhere to the Institute's Motor Vehicle policy.
  • Knowledge of rigging, knots, climbing methods, aerial rescue techniques, and materiel and equipment used in tree work.
  • Must have knowledge of botanical tree names, tree characteristics, and pruning requirements of tree species.
  • Must have good oral and written communication skills, and strong organizational skills.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift/carry a maximum of 50lbs. and walk, push, pull, climb, twist, stoop, and bend to accomplish job requirements on a regular basis.
  • This position frequently requires working outdoors in inclement weather conditions and at significant heights, such as in trees, on ladders, or using aerial lift equipment.

Hiring Range

$27.00 - $33.75 per hour

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
