The Senior Control Systems Engineer is responsible for the design, optimization, and standardization of Devon's industrial control and automation systems supporting our oil and gas production facilities. This role will serve as the primary liaison between Business Unit Facility Engineers, automation technicians, and hardware & software vendors to deliver safe, reliable, and cost-effective control system solutions.

  • Serve as the control systems subject matter expert; collaborate with electrical and facility engineers to design, develop, and facilitate adoption of standardized automation & control systems for new and existing oil & gas facilities.

  • Prepare technical documentation, including specifications, CAD drawings, and standard operating procedures.

  • Develop innovative and value-driven approaches to leverage control systems and instrumentation for enhancing operations and increasing efficiency.

  • Develop and communicate documented standards for control systems logic, HMI graphics, and alarm management systems, encouraging their adoption across all Business Units.

  • Lead root cause analysis for equipment failures and control system malfunctions.

  • Lead Devon's Automation Communities of Practice, annual summits, and related innovation initiatives.

  • Lead vendor relationships for the design, build, budgeting, and inspection of Devon's control systems environment (racks, skids, cabinets, PLCs, HMIs, etc.).

  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, safety regulations, and company policies.

  • Support and guide cybersecurity initiatives for the company's Operational Technology platforms.

  • Support commissioning, startup, and ongoing maintenance of control systems.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in industrial automation, instrumentation, or electrical technology and/or commensurate experience.

Qualifications:

  • 12-15 years of experience in control systems engineering and automation, with a minimum of 5 years in the oil & gas industry.

  • Expertise with SCADA systems, such as PLCs, HMI & RTUs, and related vendor platforms (Allen-Bradley, Emerson, Red Lion) and their associated software toolsets.

  • Expert knowledge of AC power, DC battery, and solar power operations.

  • Expert knowledge of industry standards (ISA, API, IEC) and best practices.

  • Fluent in Computer Assisted Drawing (CAD) platforms.

  • Excellent communicator with a proven track record of building and fostering company, industry, and vendor relationships.

  • Vendor (Emerson, Rockwell) and industry certifications (ISA) are a plus.

  • ISA Certified Automation Professional (CAP) (preferred).

  • Certified Control Systems Technician (CCST) (preferred).

Other Requirements:

  • Travel is required - 25 to 35%.
