Section II Summary of Job Function

Job Overview:

Performs all duties related to the preparation and testing of specimens, and documents all information required. Performs Quality Control when appropriate and documents all results. Assists students and other non-certified personnel when in the lab. Participates in evaluating, documenting, and implementing technical assays

Qualification

Required:

Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology or related field.
ASCP or NCA certification preferred. Blood Bank experience preferred.

Scheduling Requirements (non-exempt positions):

Essential Functions:

  • Allocates blood units for cross-match making sure Autologous and/or directed units are issued first.
  • Attendance, Punctuality and Provides proper notification for absence or tardiness, as per policy
  • Complies with all Standard Precautions, Infection Control, Fire Safety, Right to Know, and Hazardous Waste procedures as required by hospital and regulatory agencies.
  • Demonstrate good reasoning ability, organize work and meet TAT and other deadlines.
  • Demonstrates proficiency by receiving acceptable performance on State, CAP and internal proficiency tests.
  • Demonstrates thorough operational knowledge of the Galileo Echo Solid Phase System, including troubleshooting, QC, loading of reagents, analysis of patient samples.
  • Evaluates results of patient specimens in regard to previous results and diagnosis.
  • Is knowledgeable of and able to perform all functions of the laboratory information systems.
  • Issues blood and blood components according to established procedure and is actively involved in the review process when issuing the blood for transfusion.
  • Operates all automated instrumentation including maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Participates in cross-training and continuing education programs.
  • Perform ABO/Rh, antibody screening, and direct anti-globulin test according to established procedures.
  • Performs all necessary blood and blood component preparation procedures, I.e., pooling, concentrating, thawing, reconstituting, and blood irradiation according to established procedures.
  • Performs antibody identification, titration, and other blood groups typing according to established procedures.
  • Performs immediate spin and/or the full Crossmatch according to established procedures.
  • Recognizes and resolves technical discrepancies to supervisory personnel.
  • Responsible for and proficient in all technical procedures in the department for patient testing
  • Responsible for the accurate performance and documentation of all controls including instrument and reagent controls.
  • Responsible for the identification of patients/ specimens in compliance with all hospital and regulatory requirements
  • Responsible for the proper documentation of specimen criteria of acceptability, deciding when to repeat testing to check results, proper documentation of all results
