Overview The Grade Checker is responsible for setting grade stakes, using measuring instruments and hand tools, to guide earth moving equipment operators in sloping highways and filling embankments. The duties require substantial walking over uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, lifting and working in difficult or strained positions. The Grade Checker must read survey stakes along the highway right-of-way to determine grade specification for embankments and will measure horizontally and vertically, in specified ratio, from survey stake to juncture of embankment and initial excavation using survey rod and eye level, Top Con GPS system, Trimble Rover and TOPO. Duties include marking excavation reference points on stakes and observing excavating activities to verify conformance to stake references and notifying the on-site supervisor of deviations. The Grade Checker must be able to successfully communicate with equipment operators and project management in an effort to ensure conformance with the established stake references per the project designs.
