About the Job

The Department of Chicano and Latino Studies in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of
Minnesota occasionally needs teaching specialists or lecturers to teach courses that cannot be staffed by
regular faculty. The courses are primarily introductory or survey courses. Appointments may be full-time
or part-time and may be limited to one semester.

This does not constitute a posting for vacancies but establishes a pool of applicants should openings
occur during the coming academic year. Applicants will be selected from this pool on an as-needed basis
through the academic year. Appointments may be renewable based on need, funding, and performance.

Job Duties:

  • Develop and teach courses
  • Advise students regarding both specific coursework and broader academic or career goals
  • Provide service through participation in governance of the department and/or the University
  • Continue personal growth within the profession, keep current with the field, and broaden
    knowledge and expertise
  • Contribute to outreach activities that support the unit's mission.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications: B.A. in Chicano or Latino Studies or related field

Preferred Qualifications: Master's level or higher. College/University level teaching experiences are
preferred.

Candidates will be evaluated according to (a) overall quality of their academic preparation
and scholarly work, (b) evidence of research ability, (c) evidence of commitment to teaching and skills as
a teacher, (d) strengths of letters of recommendations, (e) success in administering undergraduate
and/or graduate curriculum

Teaching Specialists' Hiring Criteria:

Chicano Latino Studies is flexible with its degree requirements. Other important hiring criteria include
academic training, prior teaching experience, and relevant life or professional experience.

Lecturers' Hiring Criteria

Chicano Latino Studies is flexible with its degree requirements, but in order to be hired at the Lecturer
level, you will need to have a Ph.D. Other important hiring criteria include academic training, prior
teaching experience, and relevant life or professional experience.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: CLS Teaching Specialists are paid on a per credit basis as follows: Undergraduate credit courses: $2,333-$3,000 per credit, Undergraduate credit courses: $7,000-$9,000 per course; depending on education/qualifications/experience.

CLS Lecturers are paid on a per credit basis as follows: Undergraduate credit courses: $2,667-$3,334 per credit, Undergraduate credit courses: $8,000-$10,000 per course; depending on education/qualifications/experience.

Retirement plan options are available for Civil Service, Faculty, Labor-Represented, Professional & Administrative, and Temp Casual classifications. Learn more about retirement plans.
