Job Description TheUnderwriting Technical Specialistwill support their assigned region and grow our Inland Marine business profitably with Wholesale and Retail distribution partners through effective underwriting of new business and renewals according to authority level and established guidelines, participate in special projects, and provide training for less experienced staff.May have responsibility over an assigned region, niche area or large broker relationship. Expected to underwrite complex accounts and contribute to product development, forms and rate calibration. The primary duties and responsibilities of the role are:
- Meet the stated financial objectives around growth and profitability for an Inland marine portfolio.
- Create relationships with our customers and deliver our products and capabilities to help grow our share of wallet.
- Solicit risk opportunities, evaluate the exposures and price to acceptable profit expectations based upon company underwriting guidelines and granted underwriting authority.
- Own the portfolio and take necessary underwriting and broker actions on the book of business in accordance with guidance provided by the segment.
- Partner with Account Manager on new and renewal processes and appropriate servicing of accounts during their life span.
- Resolve premium audit disputes within assigned territory.
- Utilize underwriting tools to determine accurate classifications, rates, and premium charges.
- Review state laws, including cancellation and non-renewal, within assigned territory to properly transact business within the state.
- Consult with general agents/brokers to obtain further information, quote rates, or explain underwriting guidelines.
- Create, analyze, and interpret data from various reports.
- Manage assigned underwriting territory, including management of agents; build a pipeline of opportunities to meet new business objectives and retention of profitable accounts and establish appropriate visibility with our business partners.
- Actively participate in the achievement of monthly and annual profitability and production goals and objectives for assigned group.
- Be a key contributor and help build and selectively manage portfolio's overall GWP, LR and CR objectives.
- Ensure fully aware and informed of the evolving economic and insurance marketplace to ensure understand underwriting trends, legal developments and concerns.
- Participate in special projects and assignments as requested.
Core qualifications and requirements for this position include:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited university and 8 years underwriting experience with experience underwriting and marketing or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum of 7-10 years of dedicated Inland Marine underwriting with clear progression of scope and responsibility
- Experience managing a book of at least $5M.
- Experience working with admitted and non-admitted, wholesale and retail, brokers and agents.
- Inland Marine UA Committee experience
- AMIM and/or CPCU preferred.
- Experience developing guidelines preferred.
- Experience training junior underwriters on underwriting practices.
- Demonstrates an understanding and ability to effectively engage in the negotiation process.
- Adept at risk selection, exposure evaluation and ability to rate, quote and sell admitted and non-admitted solutions for Marine lines of business.
- Familiarity with AAIS Forms and Inland Marine coverages.
- Excellent organization skills, very strong analytical, oral and written communication skills required. The ability to meet tight deadlines is essential.
- Strong customer service with a professional attitude and approach needed.
- Ability to interact and communicate with various levels of the organization to cross-sell or address processing requirements.
- Demonstrate significant contribution to underwriting profit.
- Continually seeks opportunities for niche products and potential agent opportunities.
- Experience in delivering presentations to internal and external audiences.
- Requires demonstrated experience in developing and implementing an annual department business plan.
- Recognized as a leader within the organization that provides advice and guidance to others.
- Proficient in the use of computer programs, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Strong computer skills required. Must be able to work closely with various support systems and understand and apply basic programming tactics.
- Ability to travel as needed, and with short notice.
The base salary range provided below is for hires in those geographic areas only and will be commensurate with candidate experience. Pay ranges for candidates in other locations may differ based on the cost of labor in that location. In addition to base salary, all employees are eligible for an annual bonus based on company and individual performance as well as a generous benefits package. Los Angeles Pay Range: $148,700-204,500
