ECU College of Nursing is currently seeking an Undergraduate Research Assistant.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Project Title:
Exploring Silence and Stigma Surrounding Miscarriage in Latino Communities: A Community-Based Study and Telenovela Intervention
This study aims to better understand why miscarriage is often kept silent within Latino communities in North Carolina and how social, cultural, and structural factors affect grieving and support-seeking after pregnancy loss. We are also exploring whether a telenovela-style educational video could be a culturally appropriate way to break the silence and foster community support.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Undergraduate Research Assistant (
URA) will be a vital member of the bilingual research team. Working under the guidance of the Graduate Research Assistant and the Principal Investigator, the RA will help ensure that study activities are culturally and linguistically appropriate. The RA's Spanish fluency is essential for effective participant communication, language support, and assisting with Spanish-language data.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support recruitment by distributing flyers and communicating with community partners
- Respond to Spanish-speaking participants via email, phone, or text
- Assist with scheduling and reminders for virtual focus groups
- Support focus groups (e.g., language interpretation, notetaking, tech setup)
- Help review and organize transcripts and translations
- Assist with survey follow-up and incentive distribution
- Maintain weekly communication with the GRA and faculty mentor
- Reviewing REDCap surveys for completion
- Other study-related tasks as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS
- Enrolled as an undergraduate student at ECU with
- Fluent in Spanish and English (verbal and written)
- Minimum of 3.0 cumulative GPA
- Comfortable speaking with community members and discussing sensitive topics with support
- Organized, reliable, proactive, and able to follow through on assigned tasks
- Interest in health, reproductive health, or culturally responsive research
- Basic familiarity with Microsoft Word, Zoom/MS Teams, and email (training available)
- Completed the CITI IRB Training Modules (preferred; must be completed upon hire)
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary, bilingual research team
TIME COMMITMENT
- Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 semesters
- Up to 10 hours/week for 16 weeks each semester
- Work is flexible but may include occasional evening or weekend focus groups
