Description

Employees in this classification plan, develop, and implement elements of occupational safety, environmental safety and related compliance programs to fulfill regulatory requirements for general industry and construction. They work under the administrative and technical direction of designated administrators and technical leaders.


Examples of Duties

45% Reviews, develops and maintains regulatory-compliant safety and health policies and procedures. Develop, update and provide training on specific safety training, including but not limited to, lockout/tagout, confined spaces, spill prevention, control and countermeasures (SPCC), fall protection, and forklift training. Share in New Employee Orientation and monthly safety training presentation duties. Utilize current Learning Management Software development and delivery of certain safety trainings. Coordinate and conduct Job Hazard Analyses; evaluate and recommend proper PPE; and update and maintain stormwater permit, air emissions report, etc. Assists with the review and revision of SIU School of Medicine protocols and procedures.
25% Participates in department meetings and provides regulatory guidance with regard to NFPA, IFC, OSHA, DOT, DOL, or any other applicable regulatory agency.
10% Serves as a member of the Infection Control and Safety Committee (ICSC); serves as a liaison between the ICSC and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee to ensure faculty and staff compliance with established safety requirements. Member of the Campus Safety Subcommittee and Campus Violence Prevention Committee. Serves on the School's Incident Command Organization under the All Hazards Emergency Operations Plan.

5% Conducts inspections of SIU Medicine buildings for occupational health and safety
issues/concerns, and proposes recommendations for corrective action. Assists
with research laboratory audits at SIU SOM facilities.
5% Assists with the proper management and disposal of regulated and special waste
materials generated by SIU Medicine in accordance with applicable rules and
regulations. Acts as the Asbestos Management Planner.
5% Investigation and assessment of accident and illness producing hazards; responds
to complaints and requests pertinent to the safety and welfare of employees,
students and campus visitors.
3% Maintains liaison between SIU SOM and the Illinois Department of Labor, Illinois
Environmental Protection Agency, Federal Aviation Association, Department of
Transportation, Illinois State Fire Marshal, Illinois Department of Public Health,
Sangamon County Public Health, and the Springfield Fire Department to ensure
compliance with fire, safety and health codes, standards and regulations.
2% Assist with annual fire safety drills.
Performs other related duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in occupational safety, engineering, environmental health and safety,
life science or a closely related scientific, technical or safety related field.

2. Five (5) years (60 months) of relative professional work experience in occupational, industrial or environmental safety.
3. OSHA 30-hour General Industry or Construction certification or ability to obtain within the first 12 months of hire.
4. Asbestos Management Planner certification or ability to obtain within the first 12 months of hire.
