HJF is seeking a Nurse Practitioner that will play a key role in clinical trials and clinical implementation of novel and emerging psychiatric interventions at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC). This position combines clinical psychiatric care, research coordination, and nursing responsibilities, ensuring the successful implementation of clinical trials, adherence to Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and FDA regulations, and safe implementation of clinical care. The clinician will provide medical and psychiatric oversight, serve as a therapist, and contribute to regulatory compliance, participant/patient safety, and scientific dissemination.

This position will be in support of the WRNMMC Directorate of Behavioral Health, Advanced Therapeutics Program. This Nurse Practitioner role will support a clinical trial of MDMA-Assisted Therapy (MDMA-AT) for service members with PTSD, potentially similar clinical trials in the future, and clinical implementation of novel and emerging therapeutics to include ketamine.

  • Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and psychotherapy for patients and research participants, with a strong emphasis on trauma-informed care and treatment-resistant conditions.
  • Provide therapeutic care in both research and clinical settings.
  • Administer novel psychiatric treatments in accordance with approved clinical protocols and monitor physiological and psychological safety throughout treatment.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of interventions (e.g., MDMA-AT, ketamine) and adjust treatment plans as needed based on symptom progression, patient response, and protocol/SOP requirements.
  • Prepare patients for therapy or dosing sessions, conduct pre- and post-treatment monitoring, and manage follow-up care.
  • Educate patients and their families about treatment or study procedures, expected outcomes, and safety considerations.
  • Manage clinic operations as needed, including booking appointments, returning patient calls, distributing program materials, and coordinating care.
  • Collaborate closely with physicians, therapists, study coordinators, and other members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure safe, high-quality, and effective care.
  • Serve as a medical sub-investigator on clinical trials, ensuring adherence to GCP, FDA, IRB, and DoD regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in the development, revision, and implementation of research protocols and SOPs.
  • Provide psychiatric and medical supervision to support protocol fidelity and participant safety in FDA-regulated research.
  • Participate in investigator meetings and assist with protocol amendments, annual reports, and other regulatory submissions.
  • Identify trends in participant response and propose improvements in protocol design or methodology as needed.
  • Assist in the development of scientific publications, presentations, and grant applications related to study outcomes.
  • Assist in developing and delivering training programs on novel psychopharmacological interventions and psychedelic-assisted therapy best practices.
  • Provide mentorship, consultation, and ongoing supervision to therapists, clinicians, and research staff as appropriate.
  • Develop educational materials and contribute to continuing education programs for military and civilian healthcare providers.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.


Supervisory Responsibilities



  • Assigned Lead: May recommend the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, and starting salaries; provide input on employee performance evaluations.


Education and Experience:



  • Master's Degree in Nursing (MSN) required, Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) preferred.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years experience required.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:



  • Prior clinical experience in psychiatry or behavioral health.
  • Experience in clinical trials or clinical research involving FDA-regulated interventions.
  • Prior experience administering psychedelic-assisted therapy and/or IV ketamine therapy preferred.
  • Strong documentation, organizational, and interdisciplinary collaboration skills.
  • US Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a T3/Secret Clearance.


Licenses and Certifications:



  • Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner certification (PMHNP-BC) preferred.
  • Licensed (or license-eligible) to practice in Maryland.


Physical Capabilities



  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 10 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.


Work Environment:



  • This position will take place primarily in a clinic setting.
  • Please note, we are open to considering candidates who are looking to start as part-time employees and later transition to full-time.


Compensation



  • The annual salary range for this position is $88,600-$120,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
