As a key member of the University of Iowa Health Care Marketing and Communications team, in the division of Outreach and Engagement, the Community Engagement Specialist is passionate about our community and state, and in building and maintaining strong, trusted relationships with our stakeholders.This temporary, six-month position, starting around mid-August (with a flexible start date), is responsible for developing and implementing strategic collegiate communications, events, and community partnerships that advance health education, strengthen statewide relationships, and elevate the institution's visibility and impact. Message Development and Implementation * Assist in developing and delivering communications that promote educational programs and institutional priorities. * Create content for digital and print channels, including newsletters, social media, and reports. * Support outreach for community relations and STEM education initiatives. * Draft materials such as event summaries, partner communications, and promotional content. * Coordinate with internal teams to help amplify engagement opportunities and program visibility. * Track communication outcomes and recommend improvements. Public Relations * Build and maintain positive relationships with faculty, staff, students, and external partners. * Collaborate across departments to support community outreach efforts. * Help manage logistics and communications for special events like open houses and ribbon cuttings. * Promote involvement in events and programs through targeted outreach and messaging. * Represent UI Health Care at community activities and maintain engagement with key stakeholders. Information Management * Support the collection and reporting of outreach-related data. * Help create presentations and impact summaries that highlight program reach and success. * Maintain tracking tools for content and communications activities. * Contribute to the organization of data and content that demonstrate the value of UI Health Care's outreach work. Strategic Planning * Support the execution of outreach and engagement plans that align with department goals. * Help identify opportunities for collaboration with community organizations. * Assist in evaluating success metrics for community and educational programs. * Contribute ideas and insights to department planning discussions. Financial Responsibility * Review and assess sponsorship requests and make recommendations to leadership. * Negotiate sponsorship benefits and value-added opportunities with community partners. * Monitor community sponsorship expenses and prepare reports to present to leadership. Supervision/Leadership * Provide direction, assignments, and management of student workers as needed. * Follow UI and UI Health Care policies and help ensure compliance in all activities. Experience Requirements * Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience. * 1 year of relevant experience in public relations, communications, or marketing, preferably in an educational setting. * Strong verbal and written communication skills. * Demonstrated time management and organizational skills; detail-oriented; ability to coordinate, track, and prioritize multiple projects or tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines. * Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings and weekends, when needed. * Ability to travel in the surrounding geographic area; and hold a valid driver's license, plus the ability to meet the University of Iowa Fleet Safety Program driving standards. * Demonstrated experience working effectively in a welcoming and respectful workplace environment.
