General Summary of Position
Prepares a variety of specimens for cytological studies and diagnostic assessments.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Processes, prepares and distributes a variety of cytological specimens. Conducts gross examinations, performs smears, cell blocks and centrifuges specimens to separate cells and sediment from blood serum.
  • Stains and mounts specimens on slides, and performs quality control procedures to assure adequacy of stained preparation. Modifies staining procedures as requested by physicians.
  • Prepares/assembles gynecological cytology smears for delivery to external laboratory facility.
  • Recognizes specimen problems and refers same to designated personnel. Prepares specimen worklists for tracking purposes.
  • Enters gross specimen data into computer, prints and delivers worksheets, overdue reports and accession logs. Files slides and reports.
  • Decontaminates counter surfaces, instruments and general work area according to laboratory protocol.
  • Answers inquiries regarding cytology requests, provides verbal reports of test results and sends results through facsimile transmission. Retrieves old cases for review.
  • Conducts diagnostic equipment, quality control and temperature checks, and troubleshoots improperly processed specimens.
  • Conducts daily supply inventories, reorders stock and maintains an adequate stock level of instrumentation and supplies. Washes and cleans equipment, and maintains work area in a manner that ensures efficiency of operations.
  • Communicates with physicians, and accommodates new or revised operational requirements.


  • Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • High School Diploma or GED required
    • Specialized and/or advanced clerical, technical or other vocational training acquired during 1 - 2 years of additional job-related training

    Experience

    • 6 to 12 months experience required


    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • May require the use of specialized medical equipment (i.e., EEG, EKG, blood analyzer), or data processing equipment (i.e., tape drives, consoles), or equipment related to cytopathology preparatory procedures.

    This position has a hiring range of $22.485 - $34.495
