Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Casual Community Safety Assistant position. The Casual Community Safety Assistant is a part-time, casual position with no benefits, starting at $22.00/hour - commensurate with experience.

Adhering to the principles of community engagement and community-oriented problem solving, the Casual Community Safety Assistant (CCSA) works to intentionally build community within a diverse community. The primary function of CCSA is to support Student Affairs in the provision of services, including but not limited to: management of social gatherings, disturbances, and disputes, and cooperative response to medical calls with Amherst College Emergency Medical Services (ACEMS) and /or Amherst Fire Department (AFD) in the residence halls. The CCSA also secures campus residential and student-controlled facilities, frequently inspecting buildings and grounds to help safeguard against personal injury, fire, vandalism, or theft, and to immediately notify relevant resources upon discovering such incidents. When assigned, the CCSA will provide authorized access to residence halls and other facilities and provide safe escorts to a diverse set of students.

The Casual Community Safety Assistant position is considered an essential position, meaning the employee is expected to report to work even if the College is closed for weather-related or other reasons. Some overtime, weekend, and occasional shift change work is required. Due to the nature of the position, the CCSA must respond to emergencies as needed.

Summary of Responsibilities:

Preventative Presence
  • Circulating presence within and across residence halls to intervene with noise complaints, social gatherings, and disputes between residents
  • Take notice of doors and windows to be sure they are properly secured


Providing Services
  • Escorts a diverse set of students after hours between campus buildings for personal safety reasons; provides lockout services for students
  • Accompany and assist Community Development Coordinators and other Student Affairs staff in conducting wellness checks and room inspections
  • Takes steps to contribute to and ensure an intentionally inclusive culture for all members of the community, where all individuals feel valued and respected


Community Standards Support
  • Report violations of federal, state, and municipal ordinances and College policies
  • Assist police officers with response to incidents and with investigative matters as requested
  • Provide documentation and testimony at court/college adjudications as necessary


Fire Prevention, Protection, and Medical Duties
  • Promptly report fire safety violations, hazardous conditions, or any damage to fire systems or firefighting equipment
  • In the event of a fire or other potential disaster, participate in evacuation activities
  • Assist with the inspection of locks in all student residence halls as necessary
  • May assist with conducting fire drills or fire watches
  • Assist officers and ambulance personnel in any way necessary
  • May provide transportation to students to or from medical facilities


Qualifications:

Required
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • A valid driver's license and successful credentialing is required in order to operate college vehicles
  • Strong customer service, time management and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative
  • Commitment to, experience with, and/or ability to work effectively with a broad spectrum of individuals from a variety of diverse backgrounds
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, as well as exercise diplomacy, and function efficiently under extreme conditions
  • Requires sensitivity to issues of confidentiality
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical and lift test
  • Successful completion of required reference and background checks (including CORI)


Preferred
  • Security, safety, or service experience
  • Demonstrated understanding of anti-bias practices
  • Current certification in CPR, First Aid, Defibrillator, Epi-Pen, and Narcan Administration. Certifications not yet attained by the start date must be attained without delay and with the assistance of the college
