Building Safety Inspector

Description
The City is seeking a dedicated and professional Building Safety Inspector. You’ll be performing multi-disciplined inspections of new and existing residential buildings and other City projects pursuant to both local and federal regulations, ensuring proper code compliance and safe conditions. Evaluates properties and construction zones to facilitate the safety of both life and property.
Essential Job Duties
- Provide respectful, professional, positive service in all interactions between co-workers, internal and external customers, community members, and the public.
- Maintain a positive and productive environment ensuring compliance with the City, Department and Division's policies, procedures, goals and objectives.
- Inspect and monitor new and existing residences and construction zones for compliance with building codes, specifications, and safety standards.
- Inspect new and existing residential buildings and premises for change of use, occupancy, or compliance with all applicable codes and ordinances.
- Inspect sewer lateral connections for code compliance and safety.
- Issue permits for construction, relocation, occupancy, and demolition in a timely manner.
- Inspect swimming pools at construction sites for compliance with regulations; enforce codes as necessary.
- Issue violation notices, stop work orders, and field correction notices.
- Meet with builders, contractors, architects, engineers, homeowners, and authorities to ensure an understanding of the current required standards and to ensure the project's effective completion.
- Review all plans, blueprints, site layouts, construction methods, and specifications for code compliance and safety regulations.
- Evaluate construction projects to determine compliance with external standards or regulations.
- Investigate complaints submitted by building departments and concerned citizens.
- Maintain all grant information and perform all tasks required to issue funds to contractors or title companies.
- Maintain knowledge of ICC residential codes.

Qualifications
Job Qualifications – Education, experience, and training that are required or desirable in order to effectively perform the job at the time of hire. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered. Additional requirements and/or substitutions may be requested and require HR approval.
- Associate or Technical degree required.
- High school diploma along with related professional experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
- Two years of construction industry and/or code enforcement experience required.
- ICC Residential Building Inspector Certification is preferred, or the ability to obtain it within 12 months of employment is required.
- Valid driver’s license required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities – These may be representative but not all-inclusive of the knowledge, skills, and abilities commonly associated with this position.
- Proficiency in the use of basic business software (word processing, spreadsheets, email, presentations) and basic office equipment.
- Knowledge of the applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations regarding the building industry; knowledge of methods, materials, and workmanship standards governing the installation and modification of plumbing, gas, electrical and mechanical systems; knowledge of current developments in the building industry.
- Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with supervisors, subordinates, co-workers, and customers by telephone, in writing, and in person.
- Ability to assess structural damage following a fire in order to determine if it is significant enough to pose a life safety threat.
- Ability to effectively organize and prioritize routine and robust tasks to meet deadlines.
- Ability to concentrate on multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to work independently under moderate supervision and make responsible decisions.
- Ability to work under established processes and solve problems within defined parameters.
- Ability to use good judgment and think quickly and rationally in difficult or stressful situations.
