Summary:

Reports to the Manager OR Support Services. Responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Operating Room Assistants and Housekeeping Aides in perioperative services. Responsible for ordering supplies and maintaining pre-established par levels in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) and for anesthesia. Performs functions for the general purpose of providing a clean and efficient Perioperative environment for patients, surgeons, anesthesia personnel, employees, and visitors.

Responsibilities:

Assists with training and orientation of new employees and provides functional guidelines on a day-to-day basis. Recommends disciplinary action to the Manager. Coordinates the hiring and dismissal of employees with designated Human Resources partner and Manager.

Fills in for Perioperative Support Service’s Manager on days off, weekends, vacation, sickness and is responsible for overseeing the complete operation of the designated area.

Prepares daily assignment schedule, completes employee performance evaluations and maintains attendance reports and daily control sheets as assigned. Develops a 4-week rolling schedule for Perioperative staff members.

Oversees the ordering of Anesthesia supplies for 36 operating rooms in assigned areas. Orders or obtains additional supplies as needed.

Performs Quality control inspections checks quality of linen when being processed and sees that all employees perform duties in a safe and timely manner.

Responsible for providing current and best practice training and education for all orientees and consistently provides feedback during orientation process for OR Assistants and Housekeeping Aides. Manages orientation logs and documents regularly during training period. Escalates issues to Manager as necessary.

Supervises the sterility of 36 operating rooms, ensuring proper aseptic techniques are being used to clean operating rooms. Performs all duties in a safe and professional manner and in accordance with established department policy and procedures.

Works collaboratively with physicians, staff, peers, and administration to continually update support system standards.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

High School Graduate or equivalent with the ability to perform basic numerical calculations and productivity analysis.

Supervisory and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with departments in discussing needs and resolving problems and complaints and to coordinate and direct activities of small group of service personnel.

Knowledge of department functions in order to assess user needs, determine and set priorities, evaluate effectiveness and recommend changes to policies and procedures.

Knowledge of personal computers and related software.

Competent in AORN standards relevant to proper maintenance & cleaning in the Perioperative environment.

EXPERIENCE:

One to two years on-the-job experience to become familiar with policies and procedures of the department, user departments, supplies materials and equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT ANDPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Continuous walking, standing, and bending. Frequent heavy lifting is required.

Exposure to varying heat and cold, lint and unpleasant odors in the work areas.

Ability to safely operate and control power equipment needed to maintain the Perioperative environment.

INDEPENDENT ACTION:

Performs independently within the department’s policies and practices. Refers specific complex problems to the OR Support Services Manager when clarification of the departmental policies and procedures are required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Day-to-day oversight of employees as a shift lead.
