About the Job

The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health is seeking a research assistant to serve on an NIH-funded project to adapt and test an evidence-based intervention to connect Somali parents who smoke with cessation resources. This position will assist the project coordinator and the principal investigator in recruiting for and conducting focus groups with Somali parents.

Duties include Recruitment and focus group data collection:

  • Supporting our research team in collecting data from a community sample of research participants.
  • Responsibilities will include:
    • distributing recruitment materials in community settings
    • having in-person or telephone recruitment conversations with possible participants
    • calling and screening potential participants for eligibility
    • supporting scheduling logistics for focus group
    • obtaining demographic information from participants
    • attending focus groups to support qualitative data collection and note-taking
    • Managing participant incentives and other logistical tasks as needed
  • Travel example: The position requires travel within the Twin Cities metro area for both community recruitment and in-person focus groups.
Qualifications

All required qualifications must be documented on application materials.

Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS with at least 2 years of research experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal 6 years.
  • Experience:
    • Primary data collection on large-scale research projects
    • Human subject research
    • Fluent in both English and Somali (written & oral)
    • Detail oriented with strong organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team with changing priorities
    • Excellent written, verbal & interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience with conducting qualitative research
  • Previous experience with community-engaged research
  • A valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation
  • Willingness to work outside of normal business hours, including on weekends, as needed
About the Department

The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Minnesota was created more than 50 years ago in response to a legislative mandate to train primary care physicians. Since then, we have been leaders in transforming the specialty through education, research, and patient care. We are the academic sponsor of seven family medicine residencies-five in the Twin Cities, two in Greater Minnesota. We are involved in medical student education activities across the Medical School's two campuses: Twin Cities and Duluth. We sponsor five fellowship programs-sports medicine, hospice and palliative medicine, behavioral medicine, clinical informatics, and human sexuality- and offer continuing medical education opportunities. Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $22.00 - $25.00 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience.
