Purpose of Position

The Senior Data Analyst will work with engineers, geologists, regulatory, and IT to acquire, access, visualize, analyze, and integrate data into decision-making. This position requires expert-level knowledge of databases, data connections, and software system architecture. This position is responsible for establishing operational plans for the job area in collaboration with University Lands' executive leadership.

Essential Functions

  • Create data mining architectures/models/protocols, statistical reporting, and data analysis methodologies to identify trends in large data sets.
  • Manage, analyze, and distill large data sets, including merged data sources, data warehousing, and data connection improvements.
  • Identify and resolve data inconsistency, fix coding errors, and address issues related to data integrity.
  • Work with databases, data warehouses, and other data systems to organize and present data in a structured and accessible format.
  • Monitor reports and performance indicators to identify and correct coding issues while optimizing reporting systems for business value.
  • Make data readily accessible and consumable to technical teams and create visualizations for management.
  • Research and apply knowledge of existing and emerging data science principles, theories, and techniques to inform business decisions.
  • Actively seeks new technology and knowledge to provide innovative solutions to business problems.
  • Work closely with engineering, geologists, and regulatory teams to ensure cross-functional collaboration.
  • Oversee usage of 3rd party data and applications, and data-oriented products. Provide guidance and input for technology product evaluations and purchases.
  • Assist in leading in-house data warehouse migration projects.
  • Assist in the automation of data warehouse testing and schema validation.
  • Develop and support ETL/ELT workflows, including deployment through DevOps pipelines (Git, Azure DevOps, etc.).
  • Work with data governance frameworks, ensuring best practices in data quality, security, and compliance.
  • Experience with Data Lake, CI/CD pipelines for data warehouse deployments with Git or Azure DevOps, Oil and Gas Accounting, or Informatica CDGC and CDI is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Agile or Scrum methodologies for project management is a plus.
  • Other duties as required.
Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and any combination of seven (7) years of relevant experience in data analytics, data governance programs/frameworks, Data Warehouse Solutions and data management, including building databases and workflows, data analytics, or related experience including three (3) years in the oil and gas industry.
  • Five years' demonstrated proficiency in SQL and Python.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in data science, applied mathematics, computer science, computer engineering, statistics, engineering, or related discipline.
  • Twelve (12) years of relevant experience in data analytics and business intelligence, including five (5) years in the oil and gas industry.
  • Strong knowledge in data management, including database administration, data workflows, automation, and business intelligence tools (SSIS, SSRS, Power BI, Spotfire, etc.).
  • Strong knowledge of SSIS and the ETL/ELT workflows, including developing, testing, deploying, and integrating with DevOps pipelines.
  • Experience with ESRI spatial data tools is a plus.
  • Experience in Informatica IDMC platform is a plus.

Additional Information

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to a minimum of 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. Participation in TRS is mandatory.
