Position Summary
Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center is seeking a SAS programmer and data manager to support multiple local and national epidemiologic studies. This position will primarily support epidemiologic studies including Benign Breast Disease study for Carolina Breast Cancer Study, a large national study focused on understanding BBD, and other North Carolina cohort studies of cancer outcomes. This position is responsible for managing project data, implementing data quality control measures, and handling technical support. Advanced SAS programming competencies, efficient data management, outstanding documentation, and the ability to work independently are critical to the success of this position.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Computer Engineering, Math, or Engineering or related technical degree from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in business application consulting or development; or
- Bachelor's degree with some computer coursework from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience in business applications consulting or development; or
- Associate's degree in computer programming and three years of experience in application consulting or development; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Journey level requires an additional one year of experience.
- Advanced level requires an additional two years of experience.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
This position requires significant SAS programming and data management experience with large data sets. Experience must include SAS data step programming, SAS macros, PROC SQL, and outputting descriptive statistics. Proven ability to import, clean, merge, and document complex data files; implement and maintain data quality control measures; create and document complex SAS analytic datasets from multiple primary files; create and document derived variables for analyses; output descriptive statistics; generate formatted reports; and develop and maintain standardized data documentation. This position requires excellent attention to detail and demonstrated interpersonal, listening, oral, and written communication skills.

The candidate should have knowledge of data security principles and familiarity working with Protected Health Information ( PHI). The candidate should also have a demonstrated ability to work independently and to prioritize and manage tasks on schedule to meet deadlines; and a willingness to acquire new SAS (or other programming) skills and knowledge as needed.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Skills that are highly valued, but not required, include experience conducting analyses using basic statistical methods such as logistic regression; experience with data visualization techniques; and experience with other software applications such as R, Python, and/or REDCap. Previous experience working in biomedical or public health research is desirable but not essential.
