PRODUCT WELD ENGINEER - SEATING STRUCTURES
SOUTHFIELD, MICHIGAN

Reporting to the Engineering Manager of North America Seating Structures SME group, theProduct Weld Engineerwill work with Product Design Engineers and CAD Designers and be responsible for reviewing product designs for welding DFM/DFA prior to design release and tool kick-off.

Work closely with Quality, Manufacturing, and Operation groups in global regions to establish procedures and specifications to be followed for welding on new and current programs.

The Role:

Your work will include, but not be limited to:



  • Attend design reviews on new programs.
  • Provide key input for weld joint designs, materials, and welding process for new programs.
  • Review and assessing welding designs.
  • Develop guidelines, procedures, and templates for weld design, quality checks, and manufacturing.
  • Create welding and joining design guidelines.
  • Interact with global regions.
  • Assist plants with welding issues.
  • Understanding customer welding and testing specifications and how they apply to Seating.
  • Support prototype builds for welding and document lessons learned.
  • Assist Manufacturing group with tool design reviews and welding parameter development at tool integrator.
  • Support new program launches.
  • Review and analyze test data from materials lab testing (cut and etch, chemical composition, micro-hardness, strength testing, etc.)
  • Perform weld trials in a weld lab to evaluate weld equipment, new technologies, materials, and product designs.



The Hour by Hour Task Breakdown with percentages:



  • 30% Meetings with peers supporting new and current programs.
  • 25% Work on continuous improvement or innovation projects.
  • 45% Review and assessing products designs for welding feasibility.



Your Qualifications:



  • Bachelor of Science in Weld Engineering Technology or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of GMAW, LBW, RSW, and RPW welding processes.
  • Ability to apply mathematics and geometry for design calculations.
  • Strong technical, computer, writing, and communication skills.
  • Proficient with Excel, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Word.
  • Lead continuous improvement projects for welding and joining.
  • Willing to travel.



Bonus If You Have:



  • "Hands on" welding experience
  • Knowledge of GD&T
  • Metallurgical knowledge or experience
  • CAD experience
