THE POSITION

The Department of General Services is actively looking to hire Capitol Groundskeepers to undertake semi-skilled maintenance and groundskeeping tasks across the Capitol Complex and its surrounding facilities. In this role, employees will engage in a diverse range of semi-skilled maintenance and repair activities, particularly focusing on the upkeep of groundskeeping vehicles and equipment, especially when assigned to the maintenance garage. The responsibilities extend to ensuring the aesthetic appeal and overall care of the grounds, which includes managing gardens, trees, and shrubbery, as well as performing lawn care and snow and ice removal duties throughout the Complex and its outlying areas. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this role, you will be responsible for operating and maintaining a diverse range of mechanized and motorized groundskeeping equipment, including but not limited to edgers, trimmers, various types of lawn mowers, tractors, leaf blowers, and snow blowers. You will be expected to read and interpret equipment manuals, perform necessary repairs and adjustments, and ensure the proper care of all tools and machinery. Additionally, you will report any significant repair needs to your supervisor. Your duties will also encompass the fertilization, seeding, and sodding of lawn areas, as well as the upkeep of gardens through activities such as cutting, watering, edging, and trimming. You will prepare planting areas and cultivate a wide variety of trees, shrubs, and perennials, while also managing the removal of trees and heavy branches as required. Furthermore, you will engage in weeding, soil cultivation, and the application of amendments like peat moss and tanbark to enhance established beds and shrub areas. Your responsibilities will extend to driving light vehicles, including jeeps and pickup trucks, for grounds maintenance, as well as monitoring the exterior of the Capitol Complex and its surrounding buildings by removing litter and debris from various areas. You will also operate and adjust irrigation systems within the complex and assist in setting up for outdoor special events by arranging seating, erecting barricades, and providing additional waste disposal options, followed by cleanup efforts. Lastly, you will be tasked with retrieving deceased animals and setting live traps to rescue wildlife from the area.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 6:30 AM to 2:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Essential Employee - required to work during emergencies and office closings.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two years of experience in general maintenance work which has involved at least two of the building, electrical, or mechanical trades; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training that affords the applicant with the Required Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities.

Special Requirement:

  • You must possess a valid Pennsylvania Class C Driver's License.

Additional Requirements:

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
