Summary
The Team Leader, Phlebotomy receives patients, gathers and enters patient registration information, orders tests, generates specimen labels, escorts patients to phlebotomy services, and performs phlebotomy on patients. The Team Leader, Phlebotomy covers draw station sites and outside services as required, performs leadership duties as assigned within the operations of Phlebotomy Services, provides daily operational oversight of the department, participates in scheduling and staffing to provide appropriate coverage for all areas to assure effective and efficient workflow, and oversees staff training to ensure training as required for the role is complete and staff are competent at the completion of their probationary period. The Team Leader, Phlebotomy assists in the review/revision of departmental policies and procedures, ensuring staff is successfully trained prior to implementation, and ensures departmental inventory and supply management in an ongoing basis.
This position reports to the Supervisor, Phlebotomy and operates within established organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
Must be able to effectively interact appropriately to an individual's intellectual level and physical ability.

Essential Functions - Perform phlebotomy on patients and perform all duties of a Phlebotomist IV.
-Assist in the coordination, implementation, and process improvement plans of the Department's Quality Improvement Program.
-Participate in service recovery and address patient complaints/concerns as necessary.
-Ensure orientation and training of employees is thorough and effective providing feedback to supervisor.
-Demonstrate ongoing learning/skill building, advanced clinical proficiency, and function as a resource and mentor to the phlebotomy team.
-Assist in the annual review and update of department policies and procedure manuals.
-Provide input to the Supervisor for performance management and evaluation purposes.
-Refer ongoing problems to supervisor for resolution.
-Consistently demonstrate leadership with the Phlebotomy Team by participating in department problem-solving, defining group concerns, proposing and implementing solutions, and acting in a positive and proactive manner.
-Assist in staffing and scheduling coordination for inpatient, outpatient, and outside services by utilizing the staffing plan and predefined schedule.
-Ensure all shifts are covered appropriately.
-Inform supervisor of gaps in the schedule.
-Ensure monthly call schedule is complete.
-Assist in day-to-day workflow and team coordination and performance as required.
-Assist in the implementation of all compliance requirements, including development of department policy and procedures as needed, CMS, Joint Commission, CAP, AABB, and OSHA compliance.
-Demonstrate organization and completion of tasks and projects in a timely fashion.
-As required, participate in weekend, holiday and on-call assignments.
-Maintain complete confidentiality.
-Comply with OSHA regulations.
-Maintain established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, confidentiality, quality improvement program, compliance, safety, infection control and environmental standards.
-Maintain professional growth and development through attendance at seminars, workshops, conferences or in-services, professional affiliations or journals to stay abreast of current trends in field of expertise.
-Meet annual competency and retraining requirements.
-Attend meetings as required.
-Perform other functions/duties as requested.

High School Diploma or Equivalent required and Other Certificate/Diploma Phlebotomy required

Licenses and Credentials

Experience
Three years of team lead phlebotomy experience for external applicants required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Leadership skills and clinical proficiency, and participation in the training and development of new employees and student interns required.
- Competency with laboratory information systems, including both accuracy and speed required.
- Interpersonal, organizational, and telephone skills required.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, take initiative and make independent decisions and maintain organized working conditions (even in stressful situations) required.
- For internal candidates must demonstrate competence as a Phlebotomist IV.
- Reliable transportation for assignments outside of the hospital required.
