Overview
Assists in assuring the security of campus buildings and equipment by performing locksmith services for University buildings. Performs work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of systems according to the shop's overall responsibilities. This is a 4-year program designed to develop the appropriate knowledge and skills to become a competent journeyman locksmith. The incumbent accomplishes this by applying acquired skills and a positive attitude in conjunction with technical knowledge and following established guidelines. Works as a member of a team on various projects or assignments.

Responsibilities
  • Cuts, duplicates, programs, and issues keys or proximity cards as requested by campus departments and in coordination with a supervisor and University police.
  • Under the direction of senior locksmiths, maintains records and access controls for the Lock shop; ensures that records are accurate and current.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs locks, locking mechanisms, and other security devices.
  • Interprets keying guidelines; uses appropriate discretion and knowledge of lock systems to preserve the integrity of the University's master key system while also meeting customer requests.
  • Assists in the combinating of cylinder pinning.
  • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
  • Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • Cleans equipment, shop area, and work site.
  • Assist carpenters with basic carpentry duties.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.


Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Locksmith aptitude is required.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of building trades.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Basic knowledge of keys, keyways, key manufacturers, key duplication machines, and key duplication techniques.
  • Basic knowledge of function, grades, and the methods of installation and locking hardware.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Basic records maintenance skills.
  • Ability to work with tolerances of 1/1000th of an inch.
  • Ability to cut and issue keys.
  • Skilled in the use of various hand and power tools common to trade.
  • Ability to learn through observation and hands on experience.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and customers.
