Global Sourcing and Procurement
The Global Sourcing and Procurement (GSP) organization is accountable for driving and delivering Procurement value to support stakeholders' and organizational strategic objectives. The GSP function delivers value to BioMarin by leading transformation change and implementing industry leading category strategies that directly support the corporate strategy. The GSP organization leverages market intelligence, subject matter expertise and business insights in the procurement of goods and services and management of BioMarin's growing third party spend of $1B+. Through collaboration with our external suppliers and internal business partners, GSP helps bring innovative new medicines to patients.
The Professional Services / Consulting Senior Category Manager is an individual contributor role supporting the organization enterprise-wide across all functions. This role reports to the Global Enterprise Services Sourcing Leader, who is part the GSP Leadership Team and reports to the Vice President of Global Sourcing and Procurement.
Role Scope:
The Associate Director, Commercial Category Manager, will be responsible for shaping and executing industry-leading procurement strategies that align with BioMarin's strategic priorities. This leader will develop deep and influential relationships with senior stakeholders, establish transparent and competitive supply channels, and drive innovation and continuous improvement in how BioMarin partners with the marketplace.
The role is primary responsibility for designing and delivering category strategies across the Commercial Services portfolio, including but not limited to:
  • Creative Agencies for Branded and Unbranded campaigns
  • Digital Advertising including Omnichannel Marketing
  • Market Research and Data Insights
  • Market Access
  • Patient Support Services
This position requires close collaboration with BioMarin's Commercial Organization globally to align on long-range plans, annual business imperatives, and strategic objectives. The Associate Director will ensure category strategies not only deliver optimized cost and quality outcomes, but also enable BioMarin to achieve a high-quality, reliable, and innovative supply base.
Strategy & Leadership
  • Business Strategy Alignment: Lead the design and execution of category strategies that support enterprise goals, create competitive advantage, and enable efficiency.
  • Stakeholder Management: Build and maintain credibility with senior leaders by demonstrating strong influence, transparent results, and strategic foresight; act as a trusted advisor to the business on external trends and supplier capabilities.
  • Leadership: Provide thought leadership in procurement and model excellence in category management.
  • Finance Collaboration: close partnership with Finance organization in support of the functional stakeholders.
  • External perspective: Maintain a forward-looking view of industry trends and innovations, leveraging external networks to bring new capabilities and insights to BioMarin.
  • Ways of working: Be the subject matter expect on evolving procurement practices and standards that may be rapidly changing internally and externally.
  • Communication: skilled in written and verbal communication.
Operational Focus
  • Strategic Category Leadership: Define multi-year roadmaps for Commercial categories, ensuring alignment with long-term business goals and risk management strategies.
  • Supplier Relationship Management: Establish and oversee collaborative, senior-level relationships with critical suppliers, optimizing performance.
  • Negotiations: Lead high-impact, complex negotiations, ensuring outcomes support strategic objectives and enterprise-wide value delivery.
  • Results and Accountability: Deliver measurable results across cost, quality, service, innovation, and risk. Set clear KPI framework to monitor performance and drive accountability.
  • Compliance: Ensure compliance with all policies and procedures, collaborate closely with the Quality organization, actively support internal audit efforts, as needed.
Skills Required
  • Demonstrated experience with category management, sourcing and procurement best practices.
  • Proven track record of developing and executing category strategies in complex, global organizations.
  • Understand risk elements of suppliers within the category markets and define/engage risk assessment and mitigation tactics.
  • Experience managing supplier relationships at the executive level, with demonstrated results in delivering value.
  • Results-driven mindset and capabilities.
  • Excellent communicator and interpersonal skills with comfort working cross-functionally to gather information and resolve conflicts.
  • Motivated, high-energy, curious, self-starter and strong business mindset
  • Experience with procurement technology, preference for Ariba/ SAP.
Qualifications:
Minimum Level of Education Required : Bachelor's degree in business, Supply Chain Management or related field. MBA / post-graduate qualifications in a related field would be an advantage.
Area of Specialization : Sourcing & Procurement, Commercial services / consulting. Extensive experience in procurement in a global capacity, preferably within the pharmaceutical sector.
  • 7+ years of experience in Procurement/ Sourcing.
  • Knowledge of Procurement tools such as sourcing, quotation analysis, contract negotiation, supplier review, supplier development and others; specific expertise with Ariba and SAP preferred
  • Demonstrated expertise in managing in scope categories, particularly category strategy development and implementation, stakeholder management and supplier relationship management
  • In-depth understanding of external environment and supplier relationship models
  • Strong knowledge of finance (cost benchmark, financial audit with key suppliers) and legal matters (contracting)
  • Clear understanding of business value, business priorities, and potential implementation risks
  • Significant experience working in a matrix (global/ regional) business environment
  • Strong networking skills and a proven ability to build productive and collaborative relationships with stakeholders and business partners
  • Strong analytical, written and verbal communications, and influencing skills
  • Ability to work in high pressure environment, often under tight deadlines
Travel Requirements
  • Periodic travel will be required to various BioMarin sites and supplier locations

Workstyle

  • Virtual unless you live within 100 miles of San Rafael, CA (zip 94901) will revert to hybrid onsite 2x weekly.

The salary range for this position is: $144,000 to $198,000. BioMarin considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans.
