Position Purpose |
The
NAGPRA and Repatriation Coordinator works under the supervision of the
NAGPRA Officer to coordinate the research, documentation, consultation, and repatriation process for collections pertaining to the
Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (
NAGPRA). Also works on the repatriation of human remains in Dartmouth's custody that do not fall under the auspices of
NAGPRA.
This is a 3-year Term position. |

- Bachelor's degree in anthropology, Native American and Indigenous studies, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 2 - 4 years professional experience in a museum, library, archive, or similar institution.
- Excellent computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office and relational database management programs.
- Experience working with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.
- Experience working with Indigenous communities.
- Ability to coordinate and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Excellent written and spoken communications skills.
- Excellent administrative skills.
- Extremely accurate and detail oriented.
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse community.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Master's Degree in anthropology, museum studies, Native American and Indigenous Studies or relevant field.
- 3-5 year(s) experience working in a museum or similar institution.
- Working knowledge of The Museum System (TMS).
- Knowledge of current registration practices and principles.
- Museum object handling.

Administration - Responds to inquiries and requests from Native American tribal officials, schedules repatriation focused consultations, builds and maintains communication channels with tribal officials. Schedules and facilitates access to collections by tribal delegations. Manages scheduling and logistics for site visits and assists in preparing other staff for visits, consultations, and repatriations of
NAGPRA eligible holdings. |

Description |
Registration & Compliance- In consultation with
NAGPRA Officer, prepares and maintains object physical files, including donor/source, documentation, conservation, images, and correspondence for
NAGPRA and osteological collections. Using the collections management database, The Museum System (
TMS), inputs new data and updates and corrects existing data related to
NAGPRA, ensuring the integrity of information. Ensures museum maintains compliance with the National
NAGPRA Program through the drafting and submission of
Federal Register Notices pertaining to
NAGPRA work as required by Department of Interior, National Park Service, and National
NAGPRA Program. |

Non-NAGPRA Repatriation-Works with key stakeholders on repatriation, proper curation, or reburial of human remains in Dartmouth's custody that do not fall under the auspices of
NAGPRA. Maintains records of outreach, notification, consultation, and tracks responses. |

Teaching and Exhibitions - Works in collaboration with
NAGPRA Officer to ensure Native American cultural objects used in teaching and exhibitions have undergone proper consultation and have been approved for use by tribal nations. Reviews all exhibition and teaching checklists containing Native American cultural objects and works with curators and Bernstein Center for Object Study staff to make recommendations for substitutions and replacements as necessary. |
