Overview
The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.

In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad. Students also have access to a robust program of applied research and outreach hosted by the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station laboratories, farms, business incubators, and marine stations throughout the state.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Rutgers Master Gardener Coordinator for the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences.

Among the key duties of the position are the following:

  • Provides administrative support for the coordination and operation of the county Rutgers Master Gardener (RMG) Program.
  • Coordinates and supervises educational outreach activities (educational workshops, demonstrations, training programs, volunteer opportunities) for the Rutgers Master Gardener program.
  • Acts as a liaison to RMG Volunteer Advisory Committee and the Union County Parks Department.
  • Participates in appropriate departmental, Rutgers Cooperative Extension, School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, University and County administrative functions, as requested.

FLSA Nonexempt
Salary Details $23/hourly

Qualifications






Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution preferably in plant science, horticulture, ornamental horticulture, entomology, horticultural therapy, plant pathology, agricultural science or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Two years of related work experience, including volunteer activities in horticulture, landscape management, ornamental horticulture, agriculture, pest management, vocational education or related subjects.

Certifications/Licenses

  • A valid driver's license would be required for this position.
  • NJ Pesticide Applicator license.

  • Ability to supervise volunteer activities effectively, prioritizing safety, engagement, and success.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of educational program development and operation, volunteer management, working with diverse audiences, collaboration/coalition building, and promotion/outreach.

  • Zoom or similar program for online meetings.
  • Gardening tools and Garden Helpline basic lab equipment used for conducting horticultural related hands-on educational activities and insect/plant identification.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Ability to be flexible with availability to work daytime, evenings and weekends, as needed.
  • Ability to work outdoors and walk over rough ground.
  • Ability to lift and handle a 40 lb. object(s).
