Job Summary

Our Group Fitness instructors teach a variety of assigned classes in our recreation program. Currently we are looking for regular instructors in a variety of fitness formats.

Under direct supervision of the Assistant Director for Recreation, instructors will provide group fitness instruction in a variety of classes, monitor & educate patrons on fitness and exercise, and maintain a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for class participants.

Instructor may be asked to teach a variety of cardiovascular, strength, dance, Pilates, or flexibility-based group fitness class formats to students, faculty, staff and members. Class formats include: Boot Camp, Spin, Weight Training, High Intensity Interval, Barre, Pilates, Dance Fitness, & Aqua Aerobics. Class size from 10-20 participants.

Essential Job Duties
  • Teach classes as assigned by the Assistant Director, including, but not limited to, Boot Camp, Spin, High Intensity Interval Cardio, Pilates, Hi Lo aerobics, Barre, Flexibility and Core conditioning.
  • Organizational skills in creating combinations to be taught within the parameters of the designated format.
  • Demonstrate the ability to move rhythmically to the beat of the music including the ability to incorporate optimal usage of cueing, tempo, choreography, and safe transitional movements from one pattern to another.
  • Instruct patrons on effective workout methods; explain proper techniques, demonstrate exercises; identify different muscle groups, and teach appropriate methods to strengthen specific muscles.
  • Maintains records as needed.
  • Teach scheduled classes, beginning and ending on time; provide adequate warm-up, Exercises and modifications, stretching, and cool-down.
  • Assist participants, answer questions, and maintain a positive exercise experience for class participants.
  • Ensure safety standards are met, and department and facility policies are followed.
  • Perform related duties as necessary.
  • Attend and participate in continued education workshops and mandatory meetings.
Basic Qualifications
  • At least 1 year of teaching experience.
  • Maintains current credentials and certifications.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, staff, faculty, alumni and community members.
  • Appreciation for individual uniqueness and diversity.
  • Must possess or acquire current Red Cross CPR/AED certification.
  • Working knowledge of human anatomy, kinesiology and physical fitness training principles.
  • Knowledge of group fitness teaching strategies and incorporation of music, tempo, cueing technique, and rhythm.
  • Ability to be professional and motivate class participants. Provide a welcoming, inclusive environment for all participants.
  • Ability to cooperate and work well with other staff members.
  • Ability to sub for other instructors at different days/times.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to teach multiple group fitness formats is desired.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Group fitness instructor certification from nationally recognized organization, AFAA of ACE (or equivalent) highly preferred. Additional specialty/certifications preferred.
  • We are we are specifically looking for an instructor to teach the following formats: HIIT & Strength on Mondays 6pm and Thursday 5pm or Wednesday 5-7pm.

Hiring Range

$40 per hour

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
