Head of US and Global Medical Legal

Overview

The role leads the provision of Legal support to ViiV United States and ViiV Global Medical Affairs.This role holder sits on the ViiV United States Leadership Team (USLT) and is responsible for supporting and managing all aspects of legal risk for ViiV US as well as appropriately enabling ViiV in accomplishing its mission and objectives. The functions supported by this role include (but not limited to) Marketing, Field Sales, Commercial Operations, Insights & Analytics, Market Access, Medical Affairs, Communications and Government Affairs. The role holder also plays a pivotal role in leading support for US Litigation, which given the size of the US market has enterprise-level significance. Additionally, the role holder manages legal support to ViiV's GM function. This includes legal support to the Chief Medical Officer and heads of the global regulatory and safety organizations, as well as all regional medical staff.

The size and complexity of ViiV's US business has grown significantly in the last 3 years, and comprise sales in excess of $4 billion, contributing over 60% of ViiV's global revenues.Several new product lines have added to the responsibilities of the role holder.The role holder leads a team of 6 legal staff and is an integral member of the USLT and GM Governance teams.

Responsibilities:

  • Member of ViiV USLT and ViiV Global Medical Governance Team
  • Lead the provision of Legal support in US
  • Lead the provision of Legal support globally to ViiV's GM function
  • Develop and influence business strategies and activities using highly developed strategic thinking and deep knowledge of ViiV's business, the competitive environment, external laws, regulations and industry codes impacting the pharma industry and FDA / other applicable agency regulatory practices
  • Key business partner to ViiV's Head of US.
  • Partner with Compliance to develop and maintain programs, processes and controls to ensure effective management of legal risk across the US
  • Key business partner to Chief Medical Officer and GM senior leadership team
  • Provide strategic guidance and lead litigation efforts for ViiV in US litigation (government, commercial, HR and IP)
  • Accountable for the recruitment, management, development and retention of legal talent in the US
  • Accountable for selection and retention of external legal counsel in allocated areas of responsibility

Basic Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate in law or equivalent post-graduate legal qualification.
  • Current license to practice law in at least one US state.
  • At least 10 years post qualification experience, preferably having worked in a major law firm
  • At least 5 years of substantial experience in an in-house role in a multi-national healthcare company with demonstrated leadership experience in pharmaceuticals and with demonstrated knowledge of medical affairs.
  • Knowledge of US laws and regulations pertaining to the research, development, regulatory approval, manufacture and sale of pharmaceuticals.
  • Experience of providing strategic advice and guidance at senior management level with demonstrated ability to influence business decisions impacting multiple commercial and medical functions.
  • Experience in commercialization and marketing regulations and practices, including FDA administered laws and regulations and those of applicable counterpart agencies worldwide.
  • Knowledge of fraud and abuse, product liability, privacy, antitrust, promotional practices, pricing regulations, and contracting with government, NGOs and private parties.
  • Experience in the conduct, management and strategic oversight of complex litigation.
  • Experience of recruiting, managing and leading a legal team.
  • Experience of coaching and developing people.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree or post-graduate qualification in the biological sciences area
  • Experience and/or technical knowledge of international markets, particularly Europe
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate across functions.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage external counsel and control legal costs effectively.
  • High ethical standards and commitment to integrity and compliance.
