Position Highlights |
This position reports to the Associate Director of Pre-Professions in The A Center, a unit within the Office of Undergraduate Education. The Pre-Professions Academic Advisor II will provide academic advising to students from all majors who are interested in pursuing law school or careers in health care (including medicine, dentistry, physician assistant, physical therapy, pharmacy, occupational therapy, and other graduate level health professions), and will assist in the delivery of programming and outreach sponsored by The A Center. This position requires some evening and weekend work, and some travel. The A Center supports advising and student services for all No Major Selected (undecided) students. In addition, we support students across the university with Pre-Profession (Pre-Health and Pre-Law) student services. In addition, this position will assist in hosting and participating in special events such as the annual Meet Your Major, Pre-Health, and Pre-Law Expos. Duties & Responsibilities |
-Provide developmental advising, major exploration advising, and informational programs to meet the specific needs of pre-law students and/or pre-health students pursuing academic programs leading to professional, medical, or law school admission. -Assist students with identifying prerequisite courses, application processes, and extracurricular activities for various health professions or law school. -Advisor will provide 25 business hours of 30-minute appointment availability weekly. -Coordinate a pre-professions peer ambassador program. -Assists & counsel students in determining educational plans, choosing courses, and exploring minors, majors, and career options. -Provide general education academic advising and registration assistance to students enrolled in The A Center. -Provide supplemental program planning and support for the Pre-Professions Advising including the development and maintenance of web-based information on academic requirements and admission to law school, health profession schools, and health career options. -Assist with the planning and implementation of several events and programs such as the Health Professions Expo, Law School Expo, and Global MedCats. -Facilitate related pre-law and/or pre-health profession workshops and presentations. -Collaborate with The A Center team to provide quality programs and services, including new student and transfer orientations. -Participate in university-wide recruitment activities such as "Destination Arizona"," UA Road Trips, AZX, and Admitted Student Day to provide information about Pre-Professions to prospective students. -Contribute to the development and implementation of departmental mission, goals, objectives, and programs. -Responsible for the revamping of content, deployment, and upkeep of website. -Other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: -Excellent verbal and written communication skills -Knowledge of student development theory -Knowledge of advising practices and principles -Ability to communicate with student populations effectively and professionally -Ability to travel (locally, regionally and/or nationally); hold a valid driver's license -Ability to effectively prioritize and perform duties autonomously -Ability to work closely and effectively with multiple departments, organizations, and individuals in a complex environment -Proficiency with Microsoft Office, (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) -Proficiency with University of Arizona Student Information System (UAccess) and Trellis -Demonstrated excellent communication and presentation skills and proactive, open, and responsive interpersonal skills -Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with university personnel: faculty, college deans, administrators, and staff, as well as representatives from business and from the community |
Minimum Qualifications |
- Bachelor's degree.
- 3 years of demonstrated knowledge of and successful experience in providing academic advising or in teaching/counseling in higher education.
- Experience working and communicating effectively with student populations.
- This position requires some evening and weekend work, and some travel, as needed.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Master's degree in Higher Education, Counseling or related field.
- Demonstrated successful experience working with post-secondary students.
- Experience in teaching freshman level courses at a two-year college or four-year undergraduate college/university.
