Role Snapshot
Our Principal IT Security Architect works closely with key IT and business unit stakeholders to lead the review, recommendation, and documentation of standards and best practices for data, network, cloud, and application security. Will play a pivotal role in ensuring compliance with WPS, contractual and government policies and standards. This role will design, and oversee the implementation of secure IT systems and infrastructure for our organization. The Principal IT Security Architect monitors industry standard best practices and trends to support the ongoing development of cyber security controls to mitigate current and emerging cyber threats.

Salary Range
$125,000 ~ $160,000.
The base pay offered for this position may vary within the posted range based on your job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and may fall outside of this range.

Work Location
Our first consideration will be to have this new employee live in the state of Wisconsin to take advantage of Hybrid work and collaboration. Employees within 45 miles of WPS Headquarters (1717 W. Broadway in Madison, WI) will be expected to be able to be able to work Hybrid 3 days a week on a regular basis.

  • Would enjoy leading the development and maintenance of security architecture documentation, standards, and guidelines.
  • Can design and develop security architecture strategies and frameworks for on-premise, cloud and hybrid environments.

  • Enjoy performing security assessments, including threat modeling and vulnerability analysis, and provide remediation recommendations.
  • Can collaborate with IT, DevOps, and engineering teams to implement best practices in secure system design.
  • Would enjoy participating in the Architecture Review Board (ARB) and Technical Review Board (TRB) to provide security and network architecture expertise.
  • Like to serve as subject matter expert on project teams that ensure security and network architecture standards are implemented according to strategy and regulatory compliance.
  • Can lead the evaluation of new technologies, tools, and services that could improve security posture.
  • Want to provide technical leadership and mentorship to security engineers and other IT staff.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulations (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA, ISO 27001, NIST, PCI-DSS).

Minimum Qualifications



  • U.S. Citizenship is required for this position due to Department of Defense restrictions.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Cybersecurity or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 5 or more years of experience in IT security.
  • 3 or more years in security architecture or similar role designing and developing information security solutions.
  • In-depth knowledge of network, application, cloud and endpoint security.
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of NIST security controls and cryptographic solutions.
  • Extensive knowledge of IT security protocols and standards.
  • Proficiency in identity and access management, encryption, firewalls, SIEM, and endpoint security.
  • Solid knowledge and understanding of DevSecOps ideologies.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving skills and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge with relevant certification (i.e., CISSP, CISM, CISA, Security+, Network+, or A+).


Preferred Qualifications



  • Familiarity with MAC-ARS controls preferred.
  • Exposure to AI security technology solutions.
  • Strong knowledge of current and emerging technology and security threats.
  • Ability to think critically and explain highly technical concepts to non-technical staff
