The Department of STEPS (Simulation Training Education for Patient Safety) at West Virginia University Health Science Center is currently accepting applications for a (Part-time) Standardized Patient.

About the Opportunity

This position is being made available for Standardized Patients who have completed specialized training and/or have consistently neared the maximum hours for a casual employee due to participation in summative examinations. This position would include travel, training, ultrasound modeling, standardized patient work, and/or standardized physical exam teaching.

What You'll Do



  • Standardized Patients (SP) and Standardized Physical Exam Teaching Associates (SPETA) are members of our community trained to portray patients in complex scenarios to provide experiences in communication, diagnosis, and physical examination skills.
  • The objective of the SPETA program is to teach portions of the physical exam in a standardized format.


Hours per week: Approximately 15/hpw

Qualifications

  • Applicants to this position will qualify under AT LEAST ONE of the following:

    • Completed GTA/MUTA training through WV STEP
    • Completed SPETA training through WV STEP
    • Consistent participation in summative examinations (at least 60 hours) at WV STEPS


  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • Exhibits ability to communicate effectively with students in a teaching capacity
  • Build rapport with students and foster a comfortable learning environment
  • Observe and provide effective feedback on students' communication and performance of the physical exam
  • Complete initial trainings and follow-up trainings to stay current with WVU Medical School curriculum
