The Office of General Counsel at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for an Assistant or Associate General Counsel.
This position reports directly to the Vice President and General Counsel (GC). The Assistant/Associate General Counsel will represent and advocate the legal interests of West Virginia University, West Virginia University Research Corporation, the WVU Board of Governors, and others on legal matters affecting the University by rendering a broad array of legal services.

Wellness programs
What You'll Do:
- Provide direct policy-making input and advice on matters of substantial magnitude related to critical University activities, policy questions, and operation procedures and as needed, draft, modify, or review institutional policies, procedures, and practices.
- Review, analyze, and develop appropriate and timely responses to FOIA requests, subpoenas, and other record requests that relate to the University
- As assigned, manage and oversee outside counsel in litigation where WVU is a named party.
- As assigned, act as lead counsel to prepare and defend WVU physicians in litigation that WVU is not a named party.
- Assist WVU staff on management of University's trademarks. Provide legal advice and counsel on trademark, licensing, and copyright issues.
- Review, analyze, and develop appropriate and timely responses to OCR complaints filed against the University.
- Review, develop, and draft appropriate University-related policies. Review and provide comments on policies received from the WV Higher Education Policy Commission.
- Review, draft, and negotiate contracts on behalf of the University.
- Assist the University and support staff assigned to the University, for federal, state, and industry sponsored contract and research grant solicitation, negotiation, administration, and compliance.
- Provide advice on issues related to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and/or the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
- Provide advice on issues related to higher education law, health care law, corporate law, employment, compliance with federal and state regulations, immigration, and/or intellectual property.
- Conduct legal research and draft memoranda.
- Provide, under supervision of GC, high quality advice to the Board on legal matters affecting the University, WVURC, and UIC.
Qualifications
Assistant General Counsel:
- J.D. degree from an accredited law school.
- 1-2 years of experience practicing law.
Associate General Counsel:
- J.D. degree from an accredited law school.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in two or more of the following areas: higher education law, contract drafting, transactional work, litigation, health care law, corporate law, employment, compliance with regulations governing federal research, immigration, trademark, and intellectual property.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Excellent oral and written skills.
- Strong legal research and writing skills.
- Ability to work collegially in a diverse, complex environment.
Requirements
- Currently licensed to practice law in West Virginia or become licensed in an agreed upon time-frame
