Job Description

Vertex Pharmaceuticals is seeking a highly motivated computational scientist to join our Data & Computational Science (DCS) team as a Senior Data Scientist II focused on Image Analytics. This role will be instrumental in building and scaling our image analytics capabilities across histopathology, high content, multiplexed, in vivo, and materials imaging studies.

You will collaborate closely with DCS colleagues, research scientists, and the Data, Technology and Engineering (DTE) group to develop scalable, production-ready solutions that drive scientific innovation and improve patient outcomes. Thus, the ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in image analysis, but also a broad skillset to address data science problems.

This is a Boston based, hybrid position requiring 3 day/week onsite.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop novel computational methods and pipelines for imaging data across multiple modalities to quantify cellular and tissue assays.
  • Identify, evaluate, and adopt cutting-edge image analytics and AI/ML methods from academic and industry sources.
  • Lead rigorous computational analyses of imaging and other biological data, contributing to new methodological approaches.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional project teams to define key scientific questions and deliver impactful image analytics solutions.
  • Promote best practices for image data integrity, provenance, and reproducibility across the organization.
  • Support downstream analyses integrating imaging with other data types such as genomics or small molecule studies.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Proven expertise in image analytics method development in at least two of the following areas: histopathology, high content, multiplexed, in vivo, or materials imaging.
  • Strong programming skills in Python and experience with image analysis toolkits
  • Proficiency with workflow languages (e.g., Nextflow), version control (Git), and cloud computing environments (AWS).
  • Hands-on experience customizing ML/AI frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow) for image analytics applications.
  • Excellent communication skills tailored to both computational and non-computational audiences.
  • Team-oriented mindset with a collaborative spirit and openness to feedback.

Education and Experience

  • Ph.D. in computer science, computational biology, bioengineering, physics, or a related field with 2-5 years of relevant postdoctoral or industry experience, OR
  • MS in a related field with 5+ years of relevant industry experience.
  • Demonstrated track record of impactful contributions to image analytics in life sciences or biomedical research.
