What You Will Do:

GFT is seeking a Principal Traction Power Designer to join our Traction Power Group This role follows an in office hybrid model at our Valley Forge, with regular attendance in our Valley Forge location.

What you will be challenged to do:

You will analyze proposed preliminary and final designs as well as existing traction power supply and distribution systems for a variety of clients and rail traction power technologies including state-of-the-art energy storage devices. Our client base includes commuter and intercity rail, rail mass transit (subway, elevated and other fixed urban guideway systems) and light rail owners and operators. We also provide design and construction management services to contractors for larger Design/Build projects. GFT provides complete engineering design and traction power system analysis of AC and DC traction power systems.

The Principal Traction Power Designer will work from drawings and specifications, technical reports, electrical schematics and performance specifications together with client and internal direction in accordance with our customers' needs. Work assignments may also entail the performance and/or planning and oversight of field instrumentation (data collection) in support of the diagnostic or validation phase of a project.

In this capacity, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

  • Develop, revise, test and analyze computer-based traction power load flow and fault studies using simulation models based on specialized software and traditional techniques.
  • Ensure that recommended system designs or improvements are effective and adhere to necessary federal, state, and local standards and laws, and comply with client specifications.
  • Perform on-site instrumentation (data collection) when needed in coordination with client staffs.
  • Help generate technical content for customer proposals as required.
  • Coordinate and guide CADD technicians to produce CADD drawings as needed, and/or capable of preparing own CADD drawings.
  • Follow QA/QC policies and procedures and identify possible quality and safety issues within the scope of the project.
  • Review and seal design drawings, if licensed.
Education | Experience:

What you will bring to our firm:

  • Bachelor's (B.S.) Electrical Engineering degree and a minimum of 10 years of experience
  • E.I.T. status preferred.
  • Familiarity with specific design requirements related to AC and DC traction power systems in transportation or a related field such as industrial or electric utility power distribution systems.
  • Understanding of or willingness to quickly learn AREMA, American National Standards Institute and IEEE and other applicable standards.
  • Familiarity with general industrial, utility or traction power system analysis (load flow and fault studies) or willingness to quickly learn.
  • Strong math skills and deep understanding of physics and engineering principles are essential.
  • Competent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to travel occasionally to client facilities and meetings.
  • Familiarity with railway or rail rapid transit systems and concepts preferred or will train.
  • Experience in power system modeling, simulation and analysis is a plus.
  • Conscientious self-starter.
* Master's Degree with a Civil Engineering focus is strongly preferred
* Experience with AutoCAD and/or MicroStation
Compensation:
Salary is dependent upon experience and geographic location.
