THE POSITION

Are you a high school student with an interest in gaining mechanic skills with a desire to kickstart your career? We are looking for a motivated Automotive Mechanic Intern to join our team at the Department of Transportation, Cumberland County Maintenance Organization. As an intern, you will be exposed to various aspects of automotive repair and maintenance, from diagnostics to routine services, allowing you to apply your knowledge in a real-world setting. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

Working side by side with a supervisory employee, you will acquire essential on-the-job competencies, including a foundational understanding of general repair and preventative maintenance for cars and light trucks. Key skills will encompass performing oil changes, tire replacements, and brake inspections, as well as assessing and replacing exhaust systems and suspension components. Additionally, you will learn to diagnose and repair air conditioning systems, document repairs accurately, and interpret work orders effectively. Familiarity with tools and equipment will be emphasized, focusing on proper handling, usage, care, and storage. A strong emphasis will also be placed on safety practices, including adherence to procedures for hazardous materials and equipment. Soft skills such as punctuality, responsibility, and accountability will be developed, alongside the completion of time sheets to track attendance and work hours.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Work schedule will vary based on agreement between high school and COPA location
  • This internship will run September 2025 to June 2026.
  • If this will be the student's junior year, the option exists for the student to continue through senior year.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS
Internship Requirements:

  • You must be at least 16 years of age by the internship start date.
  • You must be a junior or senior status for the upcoming 2025 - 2026 high school year

Additional Requirements:
  • Letter of Recommendation: You must attach a Letter of Recommendation from your school's co-op coordinator, career or guidance counselor, or similar designated school professional indicating you meet your school's requirements and are being recommended for this opportunity.
  • By participating in this program, the student and school agree to use the Commonwealth's Training Plan, Statement of Responsibilities, and Student Performance Evaluation. Forms will be provided to the student upon acceptance of this position.
  • Work Permit: Minors will be required to submit their Work Permit upon acceptance of this position.
  • Must be a vo-tech (career and technical center) student in an approved cooperative vocational training program that has prepared the student for the duties and the description of work described in this posting.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
