Pay Range

$41.93 - $61.57 Hourly

$41.93 - $51.33 Hourly for the 533.2 level

$50.28 - $61.57 Hourly for the 533.3 level

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting.Pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage. Job Description

We have multiple openings for aMechanical Technologist/Sr. Mechanical Technologist to support LLNL's Site 300 (Tracy, CA) Flash X-Ray (FXR) Accelerator.You will provide technical design, fabrication, and testing of accelerator high vacuum and power conditioning systems, performing routine maintenance and troubleshooting as necessary on accelerator support equipment. You will also participate in Research & Development (R&D) and prototyping activities in support of the development of new and advanced radiographic capabilities at the FXR facility. Some travel may be required. This position is in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED) supporting the Accelerator Group within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.

You will

  • Provide general technical support to various programmatic tasks while applying intermediate level skills and knowledge of technical design, fabrication, and testing while working under general supervision.
  • Perform facility-related and technical tasks, including maintenance, testing, and upgrades of FXR Accelerator support equipment, such as high vacuum systems, SF6, dry air, de-ionized water, and oil conditioning systems.
  • Design, fabricate, assemble, and disassemble moderately complex mechanical systems, including High Vacuum Systems, and perform vacuum leak checks using detection equipment.
  • Operate hand and power tools, lathes, mills, and welding equipment and support the fabrication of hardware for the FXR.
  • Apply material and manufacturing process knowledge to solve moderately complex mechanical problems while also using established guidelines, techniques, and procedures.
  • Maintain system documentation and experimental records.
  • Follow and adhere to written, operational, and safety procedures while completing job assignments and ensure that support and experimental areas are kept clean, uncluttered, and in a state of readiness.
  • Perform work from drawings and verbal and written instructions to assemble and test various moderately complex mechanical designs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the 533.3 level

  • Provide advanced level technical assembly and disassembly support of complex FXR systems using drawings and verbal and written instructions to assemble and test various complex mechanical designs, while working independently with minimal direction.
  • Design, fabricate, assemble, and disassemble complex mechanical components and systems including planning, setting priorities, and selection of equipment and work methods..
  • Participate in project, facility, and experimental design reviews, applying good engineering and scientific principles, and identifying, analyzing, and providing solutions and alternate approaches to complex mechanical problems using independent creativity and judgment and by establishing or modifying guidelines, techniques, and procedures as necessary.
  • Author operational procedures and technical documents, and recommend improvements to safety, security, and efficiency.
  • May lead, train, or mentor other Technologists or team members.

Qualifications
  • This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top-Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
  • Associate's degree in Engineering Technology; or a technology related certificate or diploma with related work experience and related course work; or equivalent combination of education and experience in a technical or engineering field that includes mechanical training.
  • Experience with mechanical diagnostic equipment, maintaining area controls, assisting with mechanical diagnostic calibration and alignment, and performing data recovery after experiment execution.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and follow moderately complex engineering notes, sketches, drawings, specifications, and procedures, with knowledge of ASME Y14.5.
  • Intermediate level skills and knowledge of engineering hardware design and testing processes.
  • Experience in general machining processes with the ability to operate hand/power tools, lathes, mills, and welding equipment.
  • Effective written and verbal communication, interpersonal, teamwork, and presentation skills and ability to work constructively in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Ability to complete and maintain certifications as required by the position.
  • Fundamental knowledge of and experience using office computer software, operating systems, word processing spreadsheets, databases, and computer aided drafting/design software.
  • Ability to travel.

Additional qualifications, at the 533.3 level

  • Advanced level knowledge of machine tool technology and with experience using high level precision metrology tooling.
  • Advanced level technical skills and knowledge of engineering principles to regularly make decisions and to solve complex technical problems.
  • Ability to lead, train, provide technical direction to, or mentor other team members.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience working with and/or around high-voltage and high-current equipment.
  • Quality Assurance/Quality Control documentation skills used in an engineering environment.

This is a Flexible Term appointment, which is for a definite period not to exceed six years.If final candidate is a Career Indefinite employee, Career Indefinite status may be maintained (should funding allow).

Site 300

Site 300 is an experimental test site operated by LLNL. Situated on 7,000 acres in rural foothills approximately six miles southwest of downtown Tracy and 15 miles southeast of Livermore, Site 300 hosts approximately 200 employees with expertise in such fields as engineering, chemistry, biology, and environmental restoration. Employees assigned to work at Site 300 may be exposed to the organism that causes San Joaquin Valley Fever (coccidioidomycosis).

Security Clearance

This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at time of hire.
