The Assistant General Counsel - Litigation is responsible for the management of litigation and pre-litigation matters and providing legal advice to the Company regarding various health insurance issues. This position must be a collaborative partner with the business to identify and respond to litigation issues through proactive problem solving.

Responsibilities:

  • Receives and reviews lawsuits and pre-litigation demands served on the Company. Determines liability exposure and recommends whether to defend or settle. Negotiates and authorizes settlements, where appropriate.
  • Represents the Company through all phases of judicial or administrative proceedings (including discovery, negotiations and arbitration) and in government investigations.
  • Prepares summaries of litigation and other legal matters, as necessary.
  • Manages outside counsel and litigation budgets.
  • Develops and maintains internal client relationship and provides coordination with outside counsel when necessary.
  • May provide support managing and advising on employment-related matters.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by management.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree is required and requires Juris Doctor from accredited law school.
  • Requires minimum of ten (10) years' experience in the practice of law, preferably in a corporate legal department or law firm, as appropriate.
  • Prefers experience in the health care industry, including familiarity with ERISA and applicable New Jersey insurance-fraud rules and regulations. Employment-law experience also a plus.
  • Requires a valid driver's license and ability to travel, primarily in New Jersey, to attend litigation related appearances and proceedings.

Additional licensing, certifications, registrations:

  • Active NJ Bar Admission or eligibility to obtain limited license for in-house counsel required
  • Requires a valid driver's license.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of health insurance industry preferred.
  • Knowledge of NJ practice and court rules
  • Must be proficient in the use of personal computers and supporting software in a Windows based environment, including MS Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Lotus Notes; Should be knowledgeable in the use of intranet and internet applications.

Travel:

  • Primarily NJ travel to attend litigation related appearances.

Horizon BCBSNJ employees must live in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut or Delaware

Salary Range:

$167,700 - $233,310

This compensation range is specific to the job level and takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to: education, experience, licensure, certifications, geographic location, and internal equity. This range has been created in good faith based on information known to Horizon at the time of posting. Compensation decisions are dependent on the circumstances of each case.
