Position Description

Primary Purpose and Essential Functions
The University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law (McGeorge), an ABA- accredited law school in Sacramento, California, is seeking applicants for the position of Associate Professor/Professor of Public Policy and Administration and Director of McGeorge Public Policy Programs ("Director"). The Director enjoys faculty status with a rank of assistant, associate, or full professor commensurate with experience. The position, at all ranks, includes voting rights, faculty governance responsibilities, and sabbatical opportunities. Although not a tenure-track position, it is designed to lead to a long-term contract that, if successfully completed, culminates in an indefinite contract with no term limits and with job security similar to a tenured position.
The Director will provide strategic leadership and ensure the highest standards of academic quality for the Master of Public Administration ( MPA) and Master of Public Policy ( MPP) programs. These programs emphasize the development of professional skills and competencies essential for public service. The Director will play a key role in fostering an engaging, rigorous, and practice-oriented learning environment. Candidates with a deep interest in educational leadership, proven experience guiding academic programs, and exceptional communication and organizational skills are highly encouraged to apply.
While the area of specialization is open, we are interested in candidates with strong research, teaching, and/or professional expertise in policy development, analysis and implementation. The faculty position will be expected to teach in two (2) of the following core areas of competency in the MPA/ MPP curriculum: leading and managing organizations, developing and implementing public policy, and analyzing and presenting data and/or in the areas of concentration that include policy analysis, public policy advocacy, or non-profit and social capacity management. The Public Policy program is hybrid with a mix of courses taught online on weeknights, in-person on selected weekends at Pacific's Sacramento campus, and hybrid online/in-person.
Students in the MPA and MPP programs are very diverse, and most are pursuing careers in public service in the Sacramento region or other areas of California. Thus, candidates should demonstrate a commitment to advancing diversity and inclusion in public service.
University of the Pacific recognizes that diversity, equity, and inclusion is foundational to the success of our valued students and employees. We prioritize policy and decision-making that demonstrates awareness of, and responsiveness to, the ways socio-cultural forces related to race, gender, ability, sexuality, socio-economic status, etc. impede or propel students, faculty, and staff.
Minimum Qualifications

  • A terminal public policy or public administration degree OR an MPA or MPP degree plus an equivalent level of work experiences and achievements in practice.
  • Five (5) years of professional experience in public administration or public policy, including work experience with a public agency, consultancy, government law jobs with a policy focus (such as serving in the chambers of a state legislator or in a government agency) or non-profit working in a public service area.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in higher education administration, program development, or the equivalent.
  • Graduate teaching experience in law, public administration, public policy, or related area.
  • Research and/or consulting experience on California public policy issues and engagement with California public agencies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity and inclusion in education and public service settings.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Professional composure and demeanor at all times.
  • Ability to promote the vision, mission, and core values of McGeorge School of Law.
