Job Summary

The Electrical Designer will use SmartPlant 3D to develop construction drawings with SmartSketch and AutoCAD for Department of Defense Sentinel project sites. Responsibilities include producing associated calculations, equipment and commodity specifications, and supporting design development of electrical systems and equipment. The role requires strong collaboration skills, technical proficiency, and the ability to ensure all designs comply with applicable codes and standards.

Major Responsibilities

  • Work under the direction of senior engineers/designers to develop design products
  • Review client requirements and incorporate them into design deliverables
  • Assist in modeling equipment and commodities used in electrical design
  • Extract 3D model data onto 2D sheets, annotate, and prepare drawings for construction use
  • Coordinate deliverables reviews with clients and across disciplines; resolve comments/feedback
  • Perform model reviews and resolve clashes with other commodities/disciplines
  • Ensure electrical system designs comply with all applicable codes and standards (e.g., NFPA 70/NEC)
  • Develop electrical designs including:

    • Grounding systems and equipment
    • Lightning protection
    • Equipment arrangement plans
    • Raceway layouts (conduit, cable tray, duct banks, etc.)
    • Bills of material and material take-offs
    • Interior/exterior lighting designs
    • Construction installation details
    • Cable routing


  • Review and check design deliverables for quality, accuracy, and functionality
  • Participate in constructability reviews and interdisciplinary coordination
  • Provide technical support to construction teams during execution
  • Travel to project locations as required


Education and Experience Requirements

Level I

  • AA/AS degree or Certificate in Engineering/CAD with 1-2 years of experience, or 4-5 years of relevant work experience


Level II

  • AA/AS degree or Certificate in Engineering/CAD with 3-4 years of experience, or 5-6 years of relevant work experience


Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with multiple disciplines
  • Experience preparing electrical system drawings for facilities such as nuclear plants, process facilities, data centers, or utility plants
  • Hands-on experience with 3D modeling software (drawing generation, design options, templates, phasing)
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Proficiency in engineering and office automation tools
  • Ability to resolve design issues independently and collaboratively
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check
  • Must be able to obtain a security clearance


Preferred Knowledge and Skills

  • Active security clearance
  • Prior experience supporting government projects, preferably with the Department of Defense


Project Overview

This role supports the Sentinel Program, which is modernizing the ground-based component of the U.S. nuclear deterrent triad, including intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) systems and launch infrastructure. The scope focuses on electrical and infrastructure design during the Engineering and Manufacturing Development phase
