Job Summary

The position is with the UCSF Memory and Aging Center (MAC) (http://memory.ucsf.edu), a dynamic multidisciplinary clinical research program investigating neurodegenerative diseases. Under the supervision of the MAC Genetics and Biospecimen Manager, the Biospecimen and Genetics Data Manager will coordinate many aspects of the Genetics and Biospecimen program data needs. Key activities of the Specimen Data Manager involve routine research data management activities including discrepancy management, manual data review, data cleaning, data transfers, data linking and merging, data analysis, generating metrics, reporting, and writing scripts to support some of this work. The Biospecimen and Genetics Data Manager will provide hands-on data management support to fulfill requests for data sets in support of research activities, as well as implementing common queries and integrating them with the center's central query tool.

They will support the Genetics and Biospecimen Program Manager in debugging data validation errors, improving overall data quality, and automating processes (such as writing scripts) to improve throughput. The Biospecimen and Genetics Data Manager will also work closely with Genetics and Biospecimen Program Manager in all aspects of specimen transfers including querying the data repositories to identify samples, communicating with the laboratory and biobank staff to facilitate the creation specimen manifests, track shipping, and confirm receipt at the receiving location, as well as being a key player in the process of returning of results to the Memory and Aging Center.

The Biospecimen and Genetics Data Manager supports our innovative and impactful biospecimens program that is critical to our clinical care, clinical and observational trials, and research activities. The Biospecimen and Genetics Data Manager is responsible for monitoring and participating in all aspects of data capture, data integration, results management, and reporting for more than 30 related specimen collection protocols involving many distributed labratories.

The Biospecimen and Genetics Data Manager will report to the Genetics and Biospecimen Program Manager for career development and for domain relevant work. Where necessary, other groups will provie support and guidance as required,

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $69,000 - $100,200 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The UCSF Memory and Aging Center (MAC) is an internationally renowned clinical research center with over 200 full time employees with offices and clinical research space located in the Sandler Neurosciences Building and multiple other buildings on the UCSF Mission Bay Campus. The MAC provides clinical care for patients suffering from neurodegenerative disease processes; from this clinical population, external referrals, and direct recruitment efforts we enroll patients into more than 50 structured research protocols and/or treatment trials. We are a California Alzheimer's Research Center and a federal Alzheimer's Disease Research Center.

The MAC's Biospecimen and Genetics program is an integral part of the Memory and Aging Center. We are in a privileged position, with access to extremely well characterized biospecimens (in terms of clinical, genetic, imaging and behavioral data associated with them) to make a significant contribution to the discovery and implementation fo reliable, accurate and early diagnostic took to diagnose neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's Disease (AD) or those contained under the frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) umbrella. And we can make that contribution by leading our own research and by providing biospecimens and data to researchers world-wide in a collaborative fashion.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and minimum one year of experience or equivalent experience / training.
  • Working knowledge of research function.
  • Working skills in systems programming, scripting and statistical software packages
  • Working skills in analysis and consultation.
  • Skills to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing.
  • Proven track record of success managing and maintaining accurate data in a complex data environment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in statistical analysis, data transformation and linking, data systems programming, and/or data schema design and documentation.
  • Basic understanding of genetics and proteomics.
  • Knowledge of Freezerworks LIMS or similar database
  • Ability to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing. Clear, concise communication style with easy going attitude.
  • Ability to multitask and be organized and work quickly in a dynamic environment with competing priorities.
  • Prior experience working in a research environment, preferably in a wet-lab or closely with a wet-lab.
  • Excellent Excel and MS Office skills
  • Knowledge of SQL
  • Proficiency in a programming language (python, R, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience using web services to integrate with LIMS or other systems
  • Experience working with relational databases or software tools to design queries and reports.
  • Minimum of 3 years of research or clinical data management experience
  • Experience in data consultation in a cross-functional environment, preferably an academic research environment.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA and best practices for securing protected health information
