Title: EMS Initial Education Coordinator

Location: Remote/Virtual - Must Live and Work in Michigan



Purpose: The EMS Initial Education Coordinator is the recognized resource for all EMS Initial Education Programs in the State of Michigan. Additionally, this position will administer and coordinate the EMS initial education program sponsor approval and re-approval process, including the on-site evaluation process. This position also performs a variety of other activities that support and measure EMS initial education program effectiveness.



Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Administer and coordinate the EMS initial education program sponsor approvals and re-approvals and associated processes, including conducting the on-site initial education program evaluation process.
  • Assure that the curriculum for MFR, EMT, Specialist EMT, Paramedic, and Instructor Coordinator is reviewed annually and is current and consistent with National, and as appropriate, Michigan specific standards.
  • Serve as liaison with the National Registry of EMTs (NREMT) related to the exam process for licensure of MI EMS personnel.
  • Coordinate the IC exam scheduling and oversee the administration of the exam.
  • Collaborate as needed with EMS Region Coordinators and the EMS CE & Specialty Education Coordinator to review and complete course schedules, site visits, and psychomotor exam requests in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Serve on State and national EMS education workgroups and committees as appropriate.
  • Participate and collaborate with Michigan EMS education organizations as it relates to EMS initial education.
  • In collaboration with the EMS Continuing & Specialty Education Coordinator, facilitate activities of the Education Subcommittee of the EMS Coordination Committee (EMSCC).
  • Participate in internal process improvement and strategic planning activities regarding EMS initial education.
  • Provide subject matter expertise to the DESoC compliance coordinator in matters of potential initial education program non-compliance and assist with complaint investigations as requested.
  • Conduct annual assessment of initial education program sponsors to measure program effectiveness and compile reports and statistics for the DET annual report.
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to facilitate recruitment for EMS education programs as well as program success.
  • Provide subject matter expertise and technical assistance to EMS initial education program sponsors as requested.
  • Provide presentations to partners and stakeholders as necessary.
  • Maintain a positive, strong, credible, professional, and interpersonal relationship with all parties relevant to MPHI and Department always projects and represent the best interest of MPHI and MDHHS.

Qualifications/Requirements:

Education: Possession of a bachelors degree in an educational related field and completion of Paramedic and Michigan Instructor Coordinator Courses. Licensed as a Michigan Paramedic Instructor Coordinator. Maintenance of Michigan EMS Paramedic Instructor/Coordinator licensures throughout employment.



Experience: A minimum of five years of experience working as a licensed Paramedic, and three years of experience as a Michigan Paramedic Instructor Coordinator coordinating EMS initial education. Prefer experience in curriculum development, program oversight, knowledge of the accreditation process for Paramedic programs, and successful strategies for learner engagement.



Important Skills and Characteristics: Excellent analytical and organizational skills. Strong oral and written communications in order to present data and best practices in an understandable manner. Must work well in team situations, as well as independently. Possesses thorough knowledge of the EMS System in its entirety. Must be able to articulate principles of effective teaching and describe his or her personal philosophy of teaching. Self-motivated, able to complete work in a timely manner, and manages multiple tasks that may have similar priorities and time constraints with minimal supervision. Must be fully competent in Microsoft office suite including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.



Work Environment and Physical Requirements:Job may require moderate physical effort including lifting materials and equipment of <50# and involves viewing a CRT or VDT screen 25% to 75% of the time. Standard office environment. Overnight travel may be required on occasion. Requires valid vehicle operator's license to perform duties of the position.
