Summary: The Aircraft Painter prepares and paints aircraft surfaces and components using various coatings and techniques to ensure a smooth, high-quality finish. Responsibilities include surface prep, masking, spraying, and inspection, all performed in compliance with safety and technical standards.
Responsibilities
Essential Job Functions:
- Prepare surfaces and apply coating techniques that will ensure surfaces have a smooth- textured and decorative appearance and meet thickness and level requirements.
- Apply various epoxy primers, lacquers, enamels, and polyurethanes using conventional and air-assisted spray.
- Make and apply stencils for lettering and decoration.
- Inspect small parts and remove all foreign material that would interfere with good paint adhesion.
- Perform any surface preparatory treatment required.
- Seal all holes and seams with the proper sealant or glazing compound as required.
- Read and interpret blueprints, maintenance manuals, maintenance procedure cards, service bulletins, technical data, engineering data, and other specifications to determine feasibility and method of preparing and painting aircraft and aircraft components.
- Cleaning of surface in preparation of sealing, masking, stripping, sanding, priming, applying design layout, including preparing stencils, lettering blocks, decals, and insignias.
- Perform surface preparation by chemical de-painting, mechanical de-painting, cleaning, buffing, sanding, blasting, and treating of aircraft surfaces and aircraft parts. This includes paint removal, surface preparation, surface treatment, blasting, and sanding on a variety of aircraft or aircraft components.
- Apply and inspect masking to protect vital areas from paint application and/or removal; inspect coatings and metal substrates for possible corrosion in compliance with acceptable standards, specifications and procedural requirements.
- Operate all abrasive and non-abrasive blasting equipment such as glass media, plastic media and water cleaning equipment.
- Clean work areas as necessary; clean and inspect tools on a regular basis.
- Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications
Necessary Skills and Knowledge:
- Shall be capable of spraying high solids, single stage polyurethane topcoats to aircraft as well as aircraft parts without runs, sags, and orange-peel.
- Capabilities shall also include the skills to properly prepare aircraft surfaces for prime and paint applications. The aircraft painter applies acquired skills in all phases of aircraft painting while maintaining compliance with all USCG safety, federal, state and local regulations.
- Shall possess the ability to work as a team member as well as individually to accomplish production goals, have a strong quality orientation, attention to detail and shall be able to prioritize workload to maintain schedules on assigned projects.
- Shall have a comprehensive knowledge of aircraft painting tools. This includes but is not limited to the following painted related tools:
- Sanders
- All types of paint guns
- Paint prep application tools
- Shall be enrolled in a contractor's Respiratory Protection Program and medically cleared to use ALC provided forced air hood respirators. The aircraft painter shall be determined medically suitable.
- Shall be able to work any shift, able to climb ladders, stairs, work in small-restricted areas, and lift up to forty (40) pounds.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum two (2) years of documented experience working in sheet metal and composite paint application and removal.
- Experience operating abrasive and non-abrasive blasting equipment.
