SUPERINTENDENT, TRAVELING

The Superintendent is responsible for planning and oversight of all aspects of the assigned projects. This includes the pre-planning for all stages of the project (from pre to post construction). The Superintendent works diligently to meet all goals set for the specific project and manage all field operational duties. This position will be traveling approximately 75% of time.

Qualifications:

Required:



  • 5-10+ years of experience with at least 5 years in a supervisory or superintendent role
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Demonstrated experience initiating and driving continuous improvement
  • Current OSHA 30 certification


Preferred:



  • Two or four-year degree in construction related field
  • 10+ years of field-related experience
  • Bilingual with the ability to communicate in both Spanish and English

Responsibilities and Tasks:

Preconstruction & Development



  • Planning & Coordination

    • Lead or participate in preconstruction efforts, including crisis management planning, site logistics and safety planning, and review of site-specific rules and regulations.
    • Complete the Redbook (project start-up guide).
    • Conduct pre-job walkthroughs and kickoff meetings.


  • Design Support & Constructability


    • Provide constructability input during early design and preconstruction.
    • Evaluate project complexity and installation methods.
    • Recommend prefabrication, modularization, and material staging strategies.


  • Estimating & Procurement

    • Review drawings, specifications, and scopes of work for clarity and feasibility.
    • Support estimating teams with labor unit benchmarking, production expectations, and sequencing strategies.
    • Identify long-lead items and align procurement schedules.
    • Validate labor, material, and equipment budgets before mobilization.


  • Schedule & Manpower Planning

    • Contribute to preliminary project schedules and manpower loading.
    • Participate in logistics strategies, crew ramp-up/down timelines, and delivery coordination.


  • Client & Pursuit Support

    • Provide input for proposals and interviews on logistics, constructability, safety, scheduling, and subcontractor considerations.
    • Participate in QA/AC (Quality Assurance/Alignment Check) sessions to align execution expectations.




Field Leadership & Execution



  • Lead and supervise the execution of all on-site work.
  • Oversee field staff, subcontractors, and suppliers to ensure safe, timely, and high-quality performance.
  • Supervise Assistant Superintendents; review weekly work plans, schedules, and site logistics.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve delays, scope conflicts, and labor challenges.
  • Ensure installation quality complies with plans, specifications, and codes.


Schedule & Productivity Management



  • Develop, maintain, and update project schedules in coordination with Project Management.
  • Communicate look-ahead schedules and align with master timelines.
  • Track productivity and material usage; report variances.
  • Support CPM scheduling and implement the Last Planner System.
  • Lead weekly and daily planning sessions, including Pull-Planning.


Safety & Quality Assurance



  • Champion a culture of safety through orientations, meetings, and regulatory enforcement (OSHA and others).
  • Conduct daily safety inspections and enforce site-specific safety standards.
  • Implement Quality Control plans with QC and PM teams.
  • Maintain accurate and compliant jobsite documentation.


Project & Subcontractor Coordination



  • Coordinate daily and long-term planning with other trades, the general contractor, and the project management team.
  • Organize and lead Superintendent and coordination meetings to ensure cross-functional alignment.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, designers, subcontractors, and internal McGough stakeholders.
  • Collaborate on subcontractor performance tracking, compliance, and execution consistency.
  • Track subcontractor performance, compliance and execution quality.


Project Planning & Preconstruction Support



  • Assist with procurement, subcontractor selection, and trade scope reviews.
  • Perform quantity take-offs and support bid solicitation and evaluation efforts.
  • Participate in estimating, value engineering, and early-stage project planning.


Documentation & Communication



  • Review and manage project drawings, specifications, and documentation workflows.
  • Draft and process RFIs, submittals, and shop drawings; support BIM coordination and LEED documentation, when applicable.
  • Maintain field-level reporting and communication with project management regarding cost, schedule, and quality.


Budget & Cost Oversight



  • Monitor and manage labor, material, and equipment budgets.
  • Forecast costs and identify variances.
  • Support subcontractor change orders and invoice reviews with PMs.


Project Closeout & Turnover



  • Support punch list completion, commissioning, final inspections, and owner training.
  • Ensure proper documentation and handover of systems in alignment with project closeout protocols.


Lean Construction & Company Integration



  • Lead Lean construction efforts, including standard work practices and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Integrate McGough's self-perform capabilities, warehouse resources, tools, and equipment into planning and execution.
  • Foster collaboration, uphold company values, and reinforce alignment with The McGough Way.


People Management



  • Hiring & Training: Participate in talent acquisition and onboarding; identify skills gaps and promote ongoing learning
  • Performance Management: Conduct 1:1s, performance reviews, and coaching; recognize strong performance and manage improvement plans as needed
  • Communication: Align team with company values and strategy; ensure transparent and consistent communication
  • Compliance & Culture: Promote ethical conduct, enforce policies, and foster an inclusive, safe work environment
  • Leadership: Set clear goals and provide mentorship to team members, encouraging a culture of accountability and collaboration


Post-Construction



  • Participate in punch list generation and resolution
  • Assist in preparing final as-built documentation
  • Perform additional duties as assigned


Strategy Management



  • Stay informed of industry trends and identify new opportunities
  • Support construction process improvements and innovations
  • Manage key external relationships and partnerships


Other Duties



  • Actively contribute as a member of the Iowa Team, collaborating to support shared goals and objectives
  • Engage in business development by building and maintaining strong relationships with clients, design teams, consultants, and subcontractors, and participating in industry and McGough-sponsored events
  • Represent McGough professionally at all events, upholding company standards and serving as a positive ambassador
  • Attend company and project meetings, pursuing ongoing personal and professional development to enhance skills and performance
  • Collaborate across departments and with external stakeholders to ensure cohesive project execution
  • Actively support and participate in Lean events, promoting the McGough Way and fostering a culture of continuous improvement
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support team and project success

This position requires prolonged periods of sitting at a workstation or during meetings and travel (by plane or car). The employee must be able to lift up to 50 pounds as needed, demonstrate dexterity to write and use a computer keyboard and mouse, and possess the ability to hear, speak clearly, and distinguish colors on graphs and charts.

The role also requires occasional visits to construction sites, where the employee may be exposed to dust, dirt, uneven surfaces, outdoor weather conditions, and extreme temperatures.
