Job Summary

We are seeking a full-time QI analyst who will provide data analysis support to two primary care clinics on the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital campus: the Richard Fine People's Clinic (RFPC) and the Family Health Center (FHC).

The QI Analyst will learn and provide assistance in the quantitative and qualitative programmatic data analysis support to the clinical enterprises, with a focus on clinical quality improvement and streamlining and optimizing operations of the clinics. The position will work closely with the RFPC and FHC management teams to enact strategic planning efforts and implement continuous quality improvement programs.

The majority of the data-focused work will involve the production of reports that will support the on-going assessment of clinical services delivered through RFPC and FHC, the creation of data dashboards for providers and staff of the clinics, and data analysis to support their educational mission. The QI Analyst will, at times, under the direct supervision of the RFPC Medical Director, interact with patients (for example, phone outreach to patients transferring primary care providers, phone surveys to determine patient satisfaction.) Additionally, the QI Analyst will assist with training the clinic volunteers for the clinic (approximately 7 -10 individuals). This position will be responsible for assisting with the data and reports for multiple clinical quality and regulatory activities as assigned (examples include: perinatal activities and outcomes; chronic illness primary care targets; provider credentialing and other regulatory compliance). The position reports directly to the RFPC Medical Director, and also reports to and works closely with other members of the Management Teams, including the FHC Medical Director and FHC Leadership Team. The position has tremendous learning opportunities and areas for growth, and the individual in the position will receive robust mentorship from clinic leadership in the development of the role and responsibilities.

The QI Analyst must be able to carry out multiple tasks and projects simultaneously while maintaining critical attention to detail. It is imperative that this position diplomatically communicate between multiple parties to achieve the desired results and meet deadlines.

Under direct supervision, acquires skills and knowledge of professional concepts in quality analysis and / or improvement (QI) to assist on small projects or segments of projects.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $63,700 - $136,100 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The UCSF Division of General Internal Medicine (DGIM) at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG) delivers innovative, comprehensive and complex primary medical care to San Francisco's vulnerable patients; carries out highly impactful translational research focused on generating new knowledge to improve the health of vulnerable populations; engages in meaningful policy work focused on reducing health disparities and ensuring access to care; and trains the next generation of physician leaders and researchers in the care of vulnerable and underserved populations.

The Richard Fine People's Clinic (RFPC) is the main clinical enterprise within DGIM. As the primary care medical home for more than 9000 patients, and staffed by over 90 providers, it is one of the largest and most complex primary care clinics in the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) network, and serves as one of the leading training and educational sites for UCSF Internal Medicine residents. RFPC is housed with the UCSF Division of General Internal Medicine (DGIM) at ZSFG, which delivers innovative, comprehensive and complex primary medical care to San Francisco's vulnerable patients; carries out highly impactful translational research focused on generating new knowledge to improve the health of vulnerable populations; engages in meaningful policy work focused on reducing health disparities and ensuring access to care; and trains the next generation of physician leaders and researchers in the care of vulnerable and underserved populations.

The Family Health Center (FHC) provides the full scope of primary care services for children, adolescents, adults, the elderly, and homebound patients, serving as the medical home for over 12,000 patients. As the largest primary care clinic in the SFDPH, FHC services include continuity and urgent care for all ages, prenatal care and perinatal case management, family planning, HIV family clinic services, well child care, minor office procedures, mental health services, social services, substance abuse counseling, nutrition consultation, diabetes education and case management, nurse care management and more. Care is delivered by over 100 provider staff within a primary care continuity provider model that optimizes use of health care resources. FHC patients reflect the rich racial/ethnic and cultural diversity of San Francisco.
FHC is housed within the Department of Family & Community Medicine (DFCM), which is engaged in research, teaching, training, service and clinical activities. The FHC also provides clinical training for UCSF medical students, nurse practitioners, and pharmacy students from the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy. DFCM is nationally recognized for our pioneering research programs in primary care and community health. The DFCM has a large teaching, research and clinical set of programs and activities based at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital where this position is based.

ZSFG is a premier public hospital with a level 1 trauma center that also has a strong research enterprise. RFPC and FHC are part of the San Francisco Health Network, the city's safety net health system that cares for ~110,000 patients annually in 14 primary care health centers throughout the city.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in public health or related field, or a combination of comparable clinical education and / or experience.
  • Detail oriented, with basic organizational skills and the ability to manage time efficiently.
  • Acquiring problem solving skills to assess problems quickly and propose options for effective and timely resolution.
  • Basic interpersonal skills for collaborating effectively with clinical and technical staff.
  • Basic ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing, and the ability to contribute to clear and concise reports, presentations, and documentation.
  • Basic knowledge of various administrative and business software packages, including Microsoft Office (Excel, Powerpoint, Access) and Outlook.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Basic knowledge of QI standards, clinical chart review and abstraction, and regulatory requirements.
  • Basic knowledge of QI models, tools, and techniques, including collection, aggregation, abstraction, analysis, and reporting of data.
  • Experience with EPIC
  • Experience working with underserved and/or community based programs and a proven track record of working well with diverse populations in a collaborative role
