Job Summary

Under direct supervision, the Research Data Analyst acquires skills and knowledge of basic concepts in research data analysis. Works on small projects or segments of projects with limited scope and complexity. Involves gathering and systematically reviewing and coding electronic health record data for research. Works with their supervisor to refine the review process and coding to match the study's inclusion and exclusion criteria. Prepares lists of subjects to communicate results.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $63,700 - $84,000 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy, and Sleep Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, has had a pioneering pulmonary physiology unit since the 1960s. The physiology laboratory continues to make fundamental insights into the performance and interpretation of pulmonary function tests important for clinical care. Dr. Bhakta is the Director of Education and an Associate Director of a core component of the Division's physiology research and patient testing, the Adult Pulmonary Function Laboratory.

Dr. Bhakta is a professor of medicine in adult pulmonary and critical care. He has clinical activities in the general pulmonary clinics, intensive care units, and pulmonary function laboratory. His outpatient practice is enriched with patients who have respiratory muscle weakness and thoracic cage disorders, many of whom have non-invasive and invasive mechanical ventilatory support. Dr. Bhakta is vice-chair of the American Thoracic Society Pulmonary Function Testing Committee. He is committed to disseminating best practices for PFTs through technical standards, guidelines, and textbooks. He recently co-chaired the ATS workshop on race and PFTs that led to the publication of the 2023 ATS Statement to promote equity in PFT interpretation. He also co-chaired the 2023 ATS/ERS lung volumes technical standard update. Dr. Bhakta is active in clinical and translational research in pulmonary physiology, pulmonary function testing, and asthma.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Acquiring knowledge of research function. Acquiring ability to perform research analysis duties.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with others from diverse backgrounds.
  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.

  • Basic consultation and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Knowledge of data management systems, practices and standards.
  • Experience following the steps systematically to ensure that the data are not overlooked.
  • Significant experience using MS Word, Excel..
  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of non-technical staff.
  • Strong analytical and design skills, including the ability to abstract information requirements from real-world processes to understand information flows in computer systems.
  • Acquiring statistical analysis, systems programming, and database design skills to perform research analysis duties.
