Position Summary:
The Digital Accessibility Specialist will be responsible for ensuring that digital products, applications, websites, and services are designed and developed in a manner that is accessible to all individuals, including those with disabilities. This role requires a strong understanding of accessibility guidelines, standards, and best practices to promote inclusivity and usability for diverse user groups.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Digital Accessibility Services
  • Deliver UIC Digital Accessibility services, including consultations, exception review requests, reporting of accessibility issues, and accessibility scoring and reporting.
  • Conduct comprehensive accessibility audits of digital assets, including websites, applications, software, and documents, through various communication channels.
  • Test digital assets using a variety of assistive technologies (e.g., screen readers, magnifiers, voice recognition software) to verify compatibility and optimize user experience for individuals with disabilities.
  • Participate in design and development reviews to proactively identify potential accessibility challenges and provide guidance on inclusive design principles. Reviews may include evaluation of Voluntary Product Accessibility Templates (VPATs) and Accessibility Conformance Reports (ACRs) provided by vendors.

Digital Accessibility Training & Coordination
  • Develop and deliver training sessions and workshops for developers, designers, and other stakeholders to raise awareness and promote best practices for embedding accessibility into the design and development process.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including developers, designers, product managers, quality assurance staff, and content creators, to foster accessibility awareness and a culture of inclusivity.

Accessibility Integration, Improvement & Monitoring
  • Partner with software development teams to integrate accessibility throughout the development lifecycle, from concept to release and ongoing maintenance.
  • Administer the university-wide digital accessibility monitoring system and provide related technical support.
  • Assist in remediating accessibility issues, developing action plans, and recommending solutions. Work closely with teams to implement improvements identified during audits.
  • Engage individuals with disabilities or accessibility needs in user testing to gather feedback and guide ongoing accessibility enhancements.

Accessibility Compliance
  • Serve as the digital accessibility expert, ensuring that accessibility requirements are embedded into institutional practices to promote compliance and inclusivity.
  • Work with development teams and stakeholders to ensure digital products meet relevant laws, regulations, and standards, including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 508.
  • Identify potential barriers and ensure compliance with standards such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications Required:

  1. Bachelor Degree within Computer Science or closely related field of study.
  2. Minimum of 5 years of professional level IT experience within QA Testing which includes; experience within QA Software Testing including; design, implementation and execution of industry standard QA methodologies to support unit, integration, performance, system, usability, accessibility and acceptance testing.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of accessibility standards, guidelines, and best practices, including WCAG, ADA, and Section 508.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • A Master's degree or an advanced accessibility certification (IAAP CPACC, DHS Trusted Tester, etc.).
  • Experience working in a large, multi-stakeholder higher education institution.
  • Adept at creating accessible multimedia materials for online learning platforms (e.g., Canvas, Moodle) and educational websites.
  • Familiarity with Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles.
  • Hands-on experience (three or more years) using accessibility evaluation tools and assistive technologies like NVDA or Axe DevTools.
  • The ability to serve as a key resource for supervisors and team members in both daily operations and strategic planning.
  • Proven ability to solve complex problems by identifying accessibility issues and developing effective solutions.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills to train staff and work collaboratively with various departments.
  • Competent in managing projects from conception to completion, analyzing data sets, and developing strategic plans that align with team and organizational goals.
  • Demonstrated commitment to staying current with emerging accessibility trends and technologies.
